Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. First of all, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed Uzbekistan and found Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva to be such worthwhile destinations. We are genuinely sorry that some aspects of your experience did not meet your expectations. We did apologize during your trip for the airport transfer issue and, as a gesture of goodwill, we arranged a complimentary traditional dinner with a cultural folk show in Bukhara. We are sorry that this positive gesture was not reflected in your review. Regarding the sightseeing, our itineraries clearly specify which entrance tickets are included in the tour price. Some attractions are intentionally left as optional visits to allow travelers greater flexibility and to keep the tour cost reasonable. Whenever guests wish to visit these sites, they are welcome to do so independently during their free time. We also regret the confusion regarding the train journey. Our team always strives to assist our guests, and we continually review our procedures to minimize the possibility of such situations occurring again. We appreciate your comments, as they help us improve our services. We wish you all the best and hope that, despite these issues, you will remember the many wonderful experiences and the rich culture and hospitality of Uzbekistan.

Dear Gabor Thank you very much for your kind words and for sharing your experience. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed Uzbekistan, learned a lot from our guides, and felt well looked after by Mohamed during the tour. We truly appreciate your recommendation to future travelers. At the same time, we noticed the 1-star rating, which surprised us a little since your comments about the organization and experience were very positive. If the low rating was given by mistake, we would be very grateful if you could kindly review it, as ratings are very important for small local companies like ours. Thank you once again, and we hope to welcome you back to Central Asia in the future. Odil

Dear Rhondda, Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent trip! We are glad to hear that you found the tour enjoyable and that the group dynamics contributed to a positive experience. We appreciate your comments about the accommodations. It's great to know that the hotels were generally acceptable, with particular praise for the Inspire S in Tashkent and the hotel in Bukhara. We will take note of your observation regarding the 2-star hotel bookings and ensure that this information is communicated to future travelers. We are also pleased to hear that the majority of the guides provided excellent service, especially in Samarkand and Khiva. However, we sincerely apologize for the oversight regarding your guide in Bukhara. We understand how important it is for our guides to ensure that all participants are accounted for during tours, and we will address this issue with our team to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we strive to improve our services and provide the best possible experiences for our travelers. If you have any further comments or suggestions, please feel free to share. Thank you once again for your insights, and we hope to welcome you on another adventure in the future! Hi Daphne Wow — thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and detailed review. Reading your account of the trip honestly made our day. We're thrilled you loved the mix of old and new, and that the hands-on experiences with the masters in Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva left an impression. Those moments — watching paper being made from mulberry bark or seeing silk spun from silkworms — are exactly the kind of authentic connections we hope travelers take home with them. Your kind words about Markhabo, Muna, Lola, and Mira mean the world to us. I'll make sure each of them sees this — especially Muna, who clearly went above and beyond for your friend's birthday! That's the kind of personal touch our team prides itself on, and it sounds like she nailed it. I'm also glad our drivers made you feel safe and comfortable on the roads — they really are unsung heroes of every tour. It was lovely to hear you felt safe everywhere you went, day or night. The warmth and generosity of the Uzbek people is something we never get tired of sharing with visitors. We're so happy the Chorsu Market, the rooftop dinners, the plov, the Khiva noodles, and even those unexpectedly buttery macadamia nuts all made the cut! And yes — that eggplant dish in Bukhara is something else, isn't it? Thank you again for choosing Steppe Journeys. We'd absolutely love to welcome you back someday, and until then, we hope the memories of those minarets, domes, and snowflake-unique tiles stay with you. Hope to see you again to explore more of Central Asia again ! Odil & the Steppe Journeys team

I’m also very happy to hear your kind feedback about our guides, and especially Farzin in Samarkand. Creating a welcoming, family-like atmosphere is exactly what we strive for, so it’s great to know he made your experience so memorable. Asked on June 27th, 2026

I saw the description of the tour is Medium Intensity and I'd like to know if it'd be physical demading? We're a couple in our 60 and healthy but we'd prefer a tour that's not too much walking or require a bit of physical effort.

    Age Range
    Tour Details
    • Steppe JourneysOperatorWritten June 2026

Our 8-day Uzbekistan tour is rated Medium Intensity because it includes daily sightseeing and walking through historic cities, but it is not a hiking or physically demanding tour.
The tour is well suited for healthy travellers in their 60s. On a typical day, you can expect:

Walking at a relaxed pace through old towns and historical monuments (generally 2–4 hours in total throughout the day, with plenty of breaks).
Some uneven cobblestone streets and occasional stairs at historical sites.
Comfortable transportation between cities by high-speed train and private vehicle, so there are no long or strenuous walks.

Many of our guests are in their 60s and 70s, and they complete the tour comfortably. If at any point you prefer to take things a little easier, our guides are happy to adjust the pace where possible and allow extra time for rest.

    Asked on April 9th, 2026

Do I apply for the visa before booking this trip, or book this trip then apply for a visa? What is the situation if the visa application is rejected?

    Visa
    • Steppe JourneysOperatorWritten April 2026

We recommend the following process: First, confirm and book the tour with us. Once your booking is confirmed, we will provide an official Letter of Invitation (LOI) and supporting documents required for the visa application. Your companion can then apply for the Uzbekistan e-visa (which is usually a straightforward online process). If she needs LOI we will provide it for her. Please rest assured that visa approvals for Uzbekistan are generally smooth, especially when all documents are properly submitted.

What happens if I book this tour and then my Thai friend's application for a visa is rejected? In other words, can I cancel the tour and get a full refund.

    • Steppe JourneysOperatorWritten April 2026

No one has got rejected so far for a tourist visa and if it is rejected there is no way to obtain it. She can apply online and she will get visa, no worries. I have never heard tourist visa was rejected so far to Thai tourists. You can book so far and he can try to get visa online in May and it is given within three business days. If rejected we will refund the full amount though you won't pay full amount yet.

    • H

      Hannah

      TravelerWritten April 2026

You dont need LOI for his visa, just apply for visa but not now, you should not submit the application earlier than 3 months before arrival. Otherwise it will expire within 3 months. So you'd better apply in May.

Your advice not to apply for a visa earlier than 3 months before arrival is incorrect. We checked with the Uzbekistan Consulate in Bangkok and we were advised to apply immediately.

Thank you for the flight information, we will arrange your free pick up from airport on 30 June at 1335. By the way, you are arriving 2 days before the tour starts so, do you need us to book extra two nights for you in the same hotel we book for the tour or will you book your own hotel for pre tour nights? It will be extra $190 for two nights.

This is a small-group tour. The usual group size is 6–12 guests, ensuring a comfortable pace, good guide interaction, and a more personal travel experience.

    • Steppe JourneysOperatorWritten January 2026

Yes, this is absolutely fine. We can arrange an early-morning airport transfer and early check-in at the hotel (subject to availability) so you can rest before the tour activities begin later that day.

Pre tour or post tour extra night in Tashkent in Inspira S hotel is $95 for a double room per night.

    • Steppe JourneysOperatorWritten January 2026

No you don't have to pay extra for the transfer but we request to make selection between Van or train transfer.
if you choose train option you won't visit Shahrisabz. Take direct train at 1145-125
if you take Van option you can see Shahrisabz first and then drive to Bukhara.
Would you like to stay in Yurt instead of a hotel in Khiva?
It is possible and no extra charge.

Can I have my own travel insurance?

    Travel Support
    • Steppe JourneysOperatorWritten December 2025

We highly recommend obtaining comprehensive travel insurance, ensuring you won't need to worry about emergencies that can happen anytime, anywhere, before or during your travels. Insurance can cover the cost of your adventure(s) in the case of an unforeseen cancellation. It ensures that you do not have to worry about any unplanned changes to your travel plans, such as having to rush home to an ill family member or having an adventure changed or cancelled because of a natural disaster. It can even help with smaller things - like lost luggage or stolen cameras. When selecting a travel insurance policy we recommend a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, medical, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.
