Why Is Madagascar Different From Regular African Safaris?

You know what's incredible about Madagascar? Around 80% of the wildlife here exists nowhere else on Earth which really sets it apart from mainland Africa. While you've got amazing animals in places like Kenya or Tanzania Madagascar's been doing its own thing for so long it's created some truly unique creatures. Take the Indri lemur for example - it's the biggest lemur alive today and you can only find these amazing creatures in places like Andasibe-Mantadia National Park just hanging out in the rainforest canopy.

Which Parks Should You Definitely Visit Your First Time?

You'll want to start with Andasibe-Mantadia National Park it's fantastic for spotting those Indri lemurs I mentioned and the rainforest there is just incredible. Isalo National Park looks like something from Jurassic Park with these amazing sandstone formations and canyons while Tsingy de Bemaraha is honestly mind-blowing with its razor-sharp limestone peaks. Don't miss Ranomafana National Park either - that's where you might spot the rare Golden Bamboo Lemur plus tons of other lemur species like the ring-tailed lemur red-fronted lemur and those dancing sifakas.

How Can You Get Around Madagascar Besides Taking Tours?

Getting around Madagascar independently is definitely possible though it can be challenging. You've got domestic flights between the major cities which saves tons of time compared to driving and if you're feeling adventurous you can hire a 4x4 with a driver to explore off-grid areas. The roads can be pretty rough though so you really need high-clearance vehicles and drivers who know what they're doing. There's this really scenic train journey along the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est railway and you can even take river trips on traditional barges down the Tsiribihina River like our 10-day "Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond" tour does.
