    4.5 - Excellent

The 'Best of Italy' trip we took in April 2018 was wonderful and well planned out. The days started early, but we soon realized that this was necessary to be able to see all the great places & things that we got to to see every day on this trip. The time spent travelling from city to city on the bus was just fine, as there were rest stops fairly often. Our tour director, Patricia O'Brien was excellent and very knowledgeable about the history of each area we were in and always had lots of interesting things & stories to tell us about each place we visited. She informed us that one of her degrees was in Art History, and that came through when visiting places like the Vatican museum. Our coach driver, Alessandro Lombardi was also excellent. He is a very careful conscientious driver, and was always very pleasant & helpful. He also kept the bus very clean. The only negative things I can think of about this trip were a few of the hotels we stayed at had hard beds & hard flat pillows. Meals at quite a few of the hotels were not great either. The best hotel we stayed at was the Grand Dino Hotel in Braveno. We loved the bed, nice pillows, large room and great view of the lake & mountains. We opted to go on most of the 'optional experiences' and didn't regret any of them. We loved: the Isle of Capri, Amalfi Coast, Piazzas & Fountains of Rome, Gondolas & touring up the Grand Canal; Dinner, wine & music in the Tuscan Hills; Lake Maggiore and the boat ride to the castle on Isola Bella & tour of the castle & gardens; and dinner & tour of the winery at Castello del Trebbio in the Tuscan Hills. Also visiting the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence & viewing Michelangelo's 'David' was a special treat. I was simply amazed at the architecture and beauty of St. Marks & St. Peter's Basilias and the Pantheon. We really enjoyed our visit to the small medieval village of San Gimignano. It was a lot of walking up hill but worth it to see the town and also sample the 'best gelato in the world' at Gelateria Dondoli! This is just a very brief review. We enjoyed every minute of this trip and look forward to travelling with Trafalgar again.

Our Tour Director, Chris, was top notch. Really knew his stuff and went the extra mile to make sure we all had the best possible experience. The coach was very nice and impeccably maintained by our fantastic driver Gianni. The hotels were all at the very least acceptable by my spoiled American standards, which as I understand it, is actually quite good in Italy. The included dinners were all quite good, and one of them (what Trafalgar calls the "be my guest dinner") was probably the best overall dining experience I had the entire trip. The optional dinners were all well worth the additional cost, each one having at least 4 distinct courses. The Burano excursion and meal were particularly noteworthy. Last, but far from least, all of our local tour guides were interesting and informative, and really gave each city more character than it would have otherwise have had coming in cold, as it were.

I went on the "Jewels of Italy" tour in May 2017. Very enjoyable. We went from Rome to Pisa, Florence, Verona and then Venice. It was a fast paced tour but we saw a lot of Italy and you know what you are signing up for. If you like site seeing, this is a great bus tour. Good value for your money. Our tour guide, Guiseppe and bus driver, Maurizio were excellent. Very knowledgable and the optional tours were great. Our tour times were set up great as to avoid the huge crowds. There were 48 people on our tour, Guiseppe did a great job of keeping everyone occupied and happy.

    3.5 - Good

My wife and I decided to take the tour of Italy, we had two of the three hotels changed from those listed. (which they reminded us many times) Our travel agent said we would travel by high speed train but was mistaken, we traveled by bus. We were disc urged from using the restroom because of lack of dumping sites and the hotel in Venice was changed to a hotel on the island of Lido and we had no ability to return to sight-see Venice at night. Not a satisfied customer.
