Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, JC. We're sorry to hear that the camping facilities didn't meet your expectations and that you left feeling disappointed. Our Canadian Rockies trip includes two nights of camping with basic facilities, alongside a further eleven nights of camping at sites with facilities. We endeavour to be transparent about the style of accommodation our travellers can expect by outlining this within both the day-by-day itinerary and the accommodation section of our trip notes prior to departure, including the facilities that are generally available at the campsites used throughout the trip. We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, as it helps us understand where expectations may not have aligned with travellers' experiences. Thank you again for travelling with us, we hope you have many more exciting adventures ahead.

Thanks so much for the review, Ashley. We’re thrilled you had an incredible time in the Canadian Rockies, that Mathieu’s knowledge and those viewpoints delivered, and that the group meals were delicious and well budgeted (with a little back at the end!). Huge thanks for the recommendation, we hope to travel with you again soon!

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten May 2026

This trip covers a lot of ground, so please be prepared for some long days of driving. You'll be travelling in a van with a group, so conditions may feel a little cramped. We think this is all part of the adventure of road travel, and friendships form fast in tight quarters.

Some activities in the Rockies have flexible opening and closing dates that vary based on snowfall at higher elevations and other seasonal conditions. On departures in May, early June, September, and October, some activities like gondolas, certain mountain hikes, or rafting may be unavailable, but these shoulder season months offer the advantage of fewer crowds and a more relaxed travel experience. Your leader will have a range of alternative activity suggestions no matter the season.

Mosquitoes are most active during summer months, particularly during wetter seasons and low-lying areas where standing water provides ideal breeding conditions. To protect yourself, use insect repellent (those containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are most effective). Wear long-sleeved, light-coloured clothing especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. You may consider treating clothing with permethrin before you travel.

As we're travelling through the mountains, the weather can be unpredictable. We advise wearing layers in all seasons in case conditions change during the day. Even in the warmer months, the temperature can be very low in the mountains.

To ensure you to get the most out of the included and optional activities we recommend you are moderately fit. The hikes are a real highlight of this trip and give you access to some fantastic scenery.

This is a participatory trip. That's a fancy way of saying you're not just along for the ride – you are part of a team! Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help with camp activities like food prep and washing up.

That teamwork also extends to our optional food kitty of approximately CAD 20 per day to cover the cost of meals. This kitty saves you worrying about where to get food or sales taxes and helps keep your costs down by bulk purchasing items together to cook. (Though there's always the chance to use it for the occasional dinner out!) The kitty is optional and for your convenience, so if you've got specific dietary requirements you can opt out and purchase (and cook) your own food.

Can optional activities be pre-booked and included in the initial quote?

    Tour Details
    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten April 2026

The optional activities cannot be pre-booked or included in the initial quote. All optional experiences are arranged locally during the tour, as they depend on the day-to-day schedule, weather conditions, and availability. You will be able to discuss and book any preferred activities directly with our local tour leader once the trip has started.

This is a Basix style trip, so accommodation includes: 2 nights camping with basic facilities, 11 nights camping with facilities, 1 night in a hotel. Group Size: This is a small group tour, with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 12 travelers. Clothing & Temperature: If traveling during shoulder months (April, May, September, October), temps can dip below freezing at night - so bring extra cold-weather gear. Footwear: We recommend bringing closed-in hiking shoes. Flights from Sydney: Flights are not included in the tour price. You'll need to book your own flights to and from Canada.

These trips are comfort style. Accommodation on both tours is in hotels, mostly 3-4 star. These are small group tours, with a maximum group size of 12 and a minimum of 1. Flights are not included and will need to be arranged separately.

All luggage is carried in trailers or inside the vehicle so please don't bring more than one medium sized bag, backpack or suitcase (20kg/44lb maximum) per person. Your suitcase/rucksack may get some rough handling, so make sure it's a tough one. A small daypack with your water bottle and camera may be carried with you inside the vehicle.
