Itinerary
- Day 1
Marrakesh to Dades Gorge
This morning you'll leave Marrakesh and head toward the High Atlas Mountains, driving through the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. The road climbs steadily and offers views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Once you reach the higher elevation, you'll find it noticeably cooler, so bring a jacket. Around mid-day you'll arrive at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's also served as a filming location for various movies. Spend some time walking through the old buildings and learning about the traditional architecture. From there, continue on the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' toward Ouarzazate, passing through smaller villages and seeing more of the traditional earthen structures that give this region its character. By evening you'll reach the Dades Gorge area for your overnight stay.

Dades Gorge to Merzouga
After breakfast in the valley, head out to the Todra Gorges where canyon walls rise 300 meters on either side of you. Walking through the gorge, you'll see why this is such a dramatic part of Morocco, with the narrow passages creating a cool refuge even in summer heat. Later, continue toward Erfoud and then make your way to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. As afternoon turns to evening, you'll mount a camel and ride out into the Sahara to catch the sunset, which casts incredible colors across the sand. By nightfall, you'll be settling in at a desert camp where dinner features traditional Moroccan dishes, and you can spend the evening looking up at the stars without any light pollution getting in the way.

Stop to explore more traditional kasbahs along the route and chat with locals if you're interested in how these structures have been used for centuries. You'll pass through Ouarzazate one more time, taking in the dramatic mountain scenery as you drive the final stretch back to Marrakesh.
