Itinerary
- Day 1
Calenzana to Bonifatu
Your cab driver picks you up in Calvi and takes you to Calenzana, where the GR20 officially begins. From there you'll hike through the Bonifatu forest, walking past viewpoints that look out over the villages of Balagne. The route covers about 11km and takes roughly 4 hours, so you'll have time to settle in at your overnight spot.

Bonifatu to Haut Asco
This is one of the longer stages of the trek. Starting from Bonifatu, you'll cross multiple rivers on your way to the famous Spasimata suspension bridge. After that comes the Mouflon valley with its small lake, and then you'll head toward Monte Cinto. By evening you'll reach the Haut Asco ski station for the night. The distance is about 9.5km but the 8 hours of walking time shows how challenging this day gets.

Haut Asco to Vallone
You'll climb up the flanks of Monte Cintu to reach Pointe des Ébuolis, which is the highest point on the entire GR20. Coming down into the Melarie valley, there's a good chance you'll spot mouflons if you keep your eyes open. Tonight you're staying at a mountain shepherd's hut in Vallone, right by a stream. The starry skies up here are really something. The 9km takes about 8 hours with all the elevation change.

Vallone to Vergio
You'll make your way into the traditional Niolu region, which is really the heart of the island. The hike passes below Paglia Orba and the striking Capu Tafunatu, and if the weather cooperates you'll see views of the Gulf of Porto. The Golo Valley section has natural pools where you can cool off before reaching Vergio. This stage covers 14km and takes about 6 hours 15 minutes.

Vergio to Campotile plateau
An easier day of hiking follows as you head toward the Bocca San Pedru pass, where you'll get views of the Mediterranean coastline. The real highlight is Lac de Nino, one of Corsica's mountain jewels, surrounded by pozzines and sometimes you'll see wild horses around it. You're walking about 16km over 6 hours, so the pace is fairly steady.

Campotile plateau to Petra Piana
The day starts with a steep climb over rocky terrain up to Brèche de Capitellu. Once you reach the top, there are beautiful views of Melu and Capitellu lakes in the upper Restonica valley. After that you'll continue to Bocca Muzella at 2206m and then descend to a small plateau where the Petra Piana refuge sits. The 8.5km takes about 6 hours because of how steep some sections are.

Petra Piana to l'Onda
This is a shorter stage, though it's exposed and pretty panoramic as it sits between the Monte Rotondo and Monte d'Oro massifs. Pay attention to wind conditions because there's a variant route if things get too rough. On clear days you can actually see all the way to the Gulf of Ajaccio. The 7km takes roughly 4 hours 30 minutes.

l'Onda to Vizzavona
You're finishing up the northern section today. Starting from Refuge l'Onda, you'll walk through the Agnone Valley at the foot of Monte d'Oro. Along the way you'll cross the Turtettu bridge and pass the Cascades des Anglais waterfalls before arriving in Vizzavona. It's 10km and takes about 5 hours 30 minutes, so you'll have afternoon light when you arrive.

Vizzavona to Capanelle
The southern section begins in the beech forest of Vizzavona. You'll head toward Bocca Palmente, which has nice views of the Diana and Urbino lagoons. From there the route continues to Bergeries d'Alzeta, then follows an old mule track up to the Gîte Capanelle. The 14km takes about 5 hours, so it's a fairly solid day of hiking.

Capanelle to Col de Verde
From Capanelle you'll head to the shepherd's huts at Traghjete and continue over the Ghialgone plateau. The I Spiazzi bridge comes next, then you'll walk through the Marmano forest before reaching Col de Verde. Another 14km and 5 hours of walking, so you're settling into a good rhythm with the terrain.

Col de Verde to Cozzano
You'll climb up to Bocca d'ell'Orro and cross the Prato plateau, which has alpine meadows and really open spaces. The ridge walking here offers views of the Taravo Valley to the west and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east. Coming down through the St-Antoine forest, you'll end up in the village of Cozzano. This is 14km over 8 hours because of the elevation and terrain.

Cozzano to Coscione plateau
Get an early start from Cozzano this morning. You'll climb to Bocca di l'Usciolu and then follow a ridge with really distinctive wind-sculpted rock formations. As you descend through an old alder forest, the vegetation starts getting thicker and denser. By the end you'll reach the Plateau de Coscione where there's a shepherd's hut for the night. The 16km over 8 hours makes this another substantial day.

Coscione plateau to Bavella
The Plateau de Cuscione gives you gentler terrain today with green pastures and pozzines to walk through. Then you'll climb over the rocky slopes of Monte Incudine, which is over 2000m and the highest peak in the southern section. After descending into the Asinao Valley, you'll climb again toward the dramatic granite gullies of the Aiguilles de Bavella. The 15km takes about 8 hours.

Bavella to Conca
The final stretch begins on an easy forest path to Refuge Paliri. From there you'll descend while enjoying the fragrant macchia aromas in the warm air. By the time you reach Conca, you'll have finished the entire GR20. The last 16km takes about 7 hours, so you'll have completed this major undertaking. After arriving, you can relax knowing you've done it.

Conca
Tour services finish after breakfast. From Conca you can catch a shuttle to Porto-Vecchio, then hop on a bus heading to Bastia or Ajaccio, depending on where you need to go next.
