  1. Day 1

    Amsterdam

You'll board your cruise ship and get settled into your stateroom in Amsterdam. The city itself is worth spending time in, with its famous canal network and old gabled buildings everywhere. Walking around on foot gives you a real feel for the place, and the Rijksmuseum has some incredible Dutch paintings if you're into that sort of thing. Grab some traditional Dutch pancakes or try stroopwafels for a snack, and just wander the waterways at your own pace.

  2. Day 2

    Kinderdijk

Your ship heads to Kinderdijk, a small village known mainly for its 19 preserved windmills from the 1700s scattered across the flat landscape. The area sits below sea level in what's called polders, land that the Dutch reclaimed from the water centuries ago, and you can see the dikes and waterways everywhere. It's a quiet spot that really shows how the Dutch have worked with water management over the centuries, and the setting connects to that old story about Hans Brinker.

After arriving in Cologne, you can see the Roman history in how the city's laid out, with some old ruins still visible around town. The Cologne Cathedral is hard to miss with its twin spires, a UNESCO site from the 1200s and a great example of Gothic architecture. If you walk up to the platform on the cathedral, the views across the city are really good. You'll find modern shopping on Hohe Strasse, and the stained glass inside the cathedral throws beautiful colored light throughout the space.

The German Corner sits where two rivers meet and has a large statue of Prince William I on horseback overlooking the water. From there, your cruise continues through the Middle Rhine UNESCO area, and you'll pass vineyards on the hills, old castles, and the famous Lorelei Rock from the river legend.

You're sailing through landscapes that inspired the Brothers Grimm growing up in this region. Later you'll reach Wertheim, a historic town where two rivers join, featuring a 12th-century castle and a medieval center with half-timbered buildings. The Pointed Tower dates back 800 years, and the local Franconian wines are worth trying while you're there.

Walking through the winding streets, you'll see baroque houses owned by wealthy merchants. Our Rhine Getaway cruise was impacted by the flooding on the Rhine River, but the Viking team went out of their way to make our holiday the best that it could be under the circumstances, and we had a marvelous time. In fact, we have already booked another Viking cruise for 2025. We had the cheapest cabin option but there was nothing cheap about it. It was lovely and the cleaning crew were in there twice a day keeping it spotless. The food on board was incredible. I have never been so well fed. The staff were all cheerful and friendly and they worked very hard to make us all happy. Billy, our cruise director had a massive task presented by the flooding. He had to transfer all the guests from the Alruna to the Tialfi which involved a bus trip from Koblenz to Breisach. He travelled with us and made sure that it all went smoothly, then he remained on the Tialfi until the end of the cruise. He arranged busses to take us to the excursions that we were supposed to go to on the cruise and came along each time. On top of all that he had to deal with the guests some of which were not easy, but he remained calm and collected throughout. So top marks to Billy for a difficult job well done. The team on board the Tialfi did a great job of making us feel better about our altered itinerary. When we arrived from the Alruna they served mocktails at the door and had put a welcome card and bag of chocolates in every cabin. Every time we came back from one of our bus excursions, they would be waiting with either mocktails or macarons. Viking are simply amazing, and I am recommending them to all my friends.

This was our first Viking cruise and loved the River Cruise as there are less than 200 guests on board. The staff were friendly and very professional, the food was amazing and the Tours each day were special. Met some other guests on board who made it a fun experience - lots of laughs.
