Amsterdam
You'll board your cruise ship and get settled into your stateroom in Amsterdam. The city itself is worth spending time in, with its famous canal network and old gabled buildings everywhere. Walking around on foot gives you a real feel for the place, and the Rijksmuseum has some incredible Dutch paintings if you're into that sort of thing. Kinderdijk
Your ship heads to Kinderdijk, a small village known mainly for its 19 preserved windmills from the 1700s scattered across the flat landscape. The area sits below sea level in what's called polders, land that the Dutch reclaimed from the water centuries ago, and you can see the dikes and waterways everywhere. It's a quiet spot that really shows how the Dutch have worked with water management over the centuries, and the setting connects to that old story about Hans Brinker.

Cologne
After arriving in Cologne, you can see the Roman history in how the city's laid out, with some old ruins still visible around town. The Cologne Cathedral is hard to miss with its twin spires, a UNESCO site from the 1200s and a great example of Gothic architecture. If you walk up to the platform on the cathedral, the views across the city are really good. You'll find modern shopping on Hohe Strasse, and the stained glass inside the cathedral throws beautiful colored light throughout the space.

Koblenz - Middle Rhine
Sailing into Koblenz puts you in a city that's been around for over 2,000 years, with cobbled streets and old half-timbered houses giving it that traditional German feel. The German Corner sits where two rivers meet and has a large statue of Prince William I on horseback overlooking the water. From there, your cruise continues through the Middle Rhine UNESCO area, and you'll pass vineyards on the hills, old castles, and the famous Lorelei Rock from the river legend.

Wertheim
The ship travels down one of Germany's main rivers past small villages, farmland, and the Spessart woodlands. You're sailing through landscapes that inspired the Brothers Grimm growing up in this region. Later you'll reach Wertheim, a historic town where two rivers join, featuring a 12th-century castle and a medieval center with half-timbered buildings. The Pointed Tower dates back 800 years, and the local Franconian wines are worth trying while you're there.

Marienberg Fortress sits above the city, and you can check out the wine culture here since Würzburg hosts Germany's oldest and largest vineyard.

Bamberg feels like stepping back into medieval times, having been founded way back in 902. The 11th-century cathedral dedicated to Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II is worth seeing, and the Old Town Hall sits on a twin-arched bridge over the river in a unique setting. Walking through the winding streets, you'll see baroque houses owned by wealthy merchants. The city's also famous for its specialty smoked beer (rauchbier), and historic bishop residences like the Alte Hofhaltung and Neue Residenz are scattered around.
