Itinerary
- Day 1
Hobart
You'll arrive in Hobart and collect your rental car, then spend the day getting to know Tasmania's capital. Take the drive up Mount Wellington if you want those high views across the city and water, or stick around the lower parts of town checking out Battery Point with its old Georgian and Victorian buildings. Salamanca Place is another good option with its mix of galleries and cafes that line the waterfront.

- Day 2
Hobart to Strahan
Head west across Tasmania toward the coast, covering around 300 km to reach Strahan. On the way, stop at Lake St Clair in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and do a short hike around Australia's deepest freshwater lake. You'll likely see wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, and if you're lucky, platypuses. Strahan's a working fishing village on Macquarie Harbour where you'll spend two nights.

Strahan
This day is yours to structure however you like. Take an optional boat trip on the Gordon River if that appeals to you, or relax on the long beaches stretching along Tasmania's west coast. The Montezuma Falls Track is another option if you want to walk. By evening, there's an optional open-air theater showing 'The Ship That Never Was' right on Strahan's shore, a real convict escape story told as live performance.

Strahan to Cradle Mountain
You'll drive through Tasmania's inland landscapes for about 180 kilometers, with stops planned at Henty Dunes where you can see the 30-meter sand formations up close. After that, head through to Rosebery, a former mining town where Montezuma Falls is worth checking out. The drive continues on to Cradle Mountain, and you'll check into Lemonthyme Wilderness Resort for the next two nights, so you can settle in and explore the area at a relaxed pace.

- Day 5
Cradle Mountain
Spend the day exploring the northern section of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll walk along Dove Lake and the trails around Cradle Mountain itself, seeing glacial lakes and ancient rainforests with alpine vegetation. If you're interested in wildlife, there's an optional evening stop at Devils @ Cradle nature reserve where you can watch Tasmanian devils during feeding time, though this isn't required.

Sheffield to Launceston
Leave the mountain area and drive to Sheffield to see its mural-covered houses, then continue through the countryside to Launceston about 150 km away (or 195 km if you take the scenic Tamar Valley route). Once there, check out Cataract Gorge or ride the world's longest single-seat cable car. Near town, Bridestowe Lavender Estate is worth a visit if you're there December through early February when the lavender's at its peak. Wine fans should factor in time for the Tamar Valley region, Tasmania's largest wine area.

Cradle Mountain to Freycinet National Park
You'll head toward Freycinet National Park on a roughly 175-kilometer drive, stopping through the village of Evendale and the historic town of Campbell Town along the way. By evening you'll arrive at Coles Bay, a small coastal village where you'll check into Freycinet Lodge for two nights. The lodge sits right within the national park with views over Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards mountains, so you'll have a nice setting for the next couple of days.

- Day 8
Freycinet National Park
This day focuses on the coastal walking trails in Freycinet National Park. You can hike to Wineglass Bay or out to Hazards Beach, depending on what appeals to you. The granite peaks of the Hazards range shift color as the day progresses, and you'll see white sand beaches and turquoise water throughout. It's a good day to get out on foot and take in the coastline at your own pace.

Freycinet National Park to Hobart
Drive back toward Hobart for the final leg, which is about 195 kilometers. You'll return your rental car once you arrive. This wraps up the main tour, though you have the option to arrange an extension if you'd like to stay longer or depart right away depending on your schedule.
