I booked a 13-day “private” Mexico City and Cancun tour with Guide Ecuador, costing around $1,200 per day. Unfortunately, the experience was nowhere near the standard you would expect at this price point. The hotels were unacceptable. In Mexico City, the hotel was located just a few doors down from what appeared to be a prostitute’s hotel, which made us feel very uncomfortable. Breakfast was advertised as included, but it consisted of two pieces of toast, a juice, and coffee — absolutely not what I’d consider breakfast at this price. The toilets repeatedly blocked, and most staff spoke very limited English, which made basic communication difficult. In Cancun, the hotel was extremely old with virtually no facilities. We had more issues: the toilet blocked once, the air conditioner leaked water everywhere, the fridge smelled terrible, and the bed had only a very thin blanket. Again, completely unacceptable given what we paid. Despite being marketed as a private tour, it didn’t feel private at all. We couldn’t make adjustments, even when I was unwell and needed flexibility. It felt like Guide Ecuador simply booked standard tours with local operators and locked us into their schedule — we may have been the only people in the vehicle, but we had no control. This was especially obvious in Cancun. Because the tours were outsourced to different local operators, we were forced to follow their itinerary exactly. We couldn’t even change basic details like pick-up times or drop-off times, which completely defeats the purpose of paying for a private tour. On top of that, the 13-day itinerary included about five days where nothing was organised (arrival day, departure day, a transfer day flying Mexico City to Cancun, plus two additional “free” days). We asked them to organise drivers for those days and they couldn’t, which left us stuck doing very little because we don’t speak Spanish — one of the main reasons we paid for a private tour in the first place (to have support/interpreting and flexibility). We also had specific things we wanted to do, but because it wasn’t a real private tour, we weren’t able to include any of them. Overall, this was an extremely expensive trip with poor accommodation, poor support, and a rigid itinerary. I do not recommend Guide Ecuador. Stay far away from them.Show more

Dear Gwyneira, Thank you for your comment in order to clarify several points objectively. From the beginning, communication with you was challenging, mainly because it was handled through your assistant. On multiple occasions, the service voucher sent well in advance was not reviewed, despite clearly outlining all conditions of the trip. In Mexico City, you were specifically asked whether you wanted to do the city tour by bicycle. Your response was affirmative, and you also indicated that any coordination should be done through your assistant. For this reason, the guide was informed and had the bicycles ready for the tour. It is also important to note that during your stay in Mexico City, you told us—and we have this in written messages—that you were very happy with the guide and considered him excellent services. It is essential to clarify that the tour you purchased clearly specifies the hotel category: 3-star hotels, and those were exactly the accommodations provided. What you purchased were private services, which explains the cost, as private guides and private transportation involve higher labor costs. Throughout the trip, you had private guides for the contracted tours and 24/7 remote assistance, exactly as stated in the voucher. In Cancun, at 7:30 p.m. you requested a change to the pickup time. However, the voucher clearly states that pickup times are confirmed one day in advance, due to operational, weather, and logistical reasons determined by each local operator. Despite this being clearly stated, there was complete resistance to accepting this condition. At no point did the itinerary include a vehicle, driver, or translator during free days, as mentioned multiple times in your comment. Free days were clearly identified as such from the beginning. We fulfilled every service exactly as described in the voucher and as contracted. There were no services promised or sold beyond what was documented in writing. We appreciate your feedback, as it also helps us continue improving our processes.

The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 95 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
