  1. Day 1

    Linz

    You'll arrive in Linz, Upper Austria's capital, and have the day to explore at your own pace. The historic centre is worth wandering through on foot, or you could head to Linz Zoo if you're traveling with kids. The Ars Electronica Center and Museum for the Future has interactive exhibits that let you experiment with different technologies and installations. If you've arranged rental bikes ahead of time, they'll be waiting at your hotel ready to go for tomorrow's ride.

  2. Day 2

    Linz to Enns

    Start your morning on Mount Pöstlingberg checking out Grottenbahn, where you'll find dragons, gnomes and witches tucked into the cave setting. After that, you'll cycle leisurely along the Danube, passing through the local recreation area at Lake Pleschinger See with playgrounds and swimming spots. Later on you can take a break at Lake Ausee to try out the Aqua Park with its slides and climbing towers. Continue slightly off the Danube route to reach Enns by evening, about 40km of easy riding.

  3. Day 3

    Enns to Grein

    You're in Enns now, Austria's oldest town, so you could visit the Roman Circular Path or check out the waterpark with its 65-meter slide and then walk the castle grounds. From there, cycle along the flat Danube path through the Machland region's nice countryside. Before reaching Grein, make a stop at the Celtic Village outdoor museum in Mitterkirchen to see exhibits about Austria's prehistory. It's a straightforward 30-35km day with lots of local history to discover.

  4. Day 4

    Grein to Marbach

    Grein is known as the Pearl of the Strudengau region, a historic town that was the last safe place for ships to dock before dealing with the dangerous Strudengau eddies. You'll have options here like trying the climbing gym or taking a swim at the public outdoor pool. Then cycle through the Strudengau region with its interesting spots and landscapes as you head toward Marbach, roughly 20-25km of varied riding through the region.

  5. Day 5

    Marbach to Melk

    After breakfast, spend time relaxing at the Nibelungenbad pool in Marbach if you want to slow down. From Maria Taferl you get nice views of the Danube valley. It's just a few kilometers more to reach the Wachau region, famous for its apricots and apples. The Wachau's got good regional food at reasonable prices, so this is a nice spot to grab lunch or dinner without breaking the budget.

  6. Day 6

    Melk to Krems

    Visit the Benedictine monastery at Melk, which sits at the gateway to the Wachau. For getting to Krems you've got choices. Take a boat trip and stop at Spitz or Dürnstein before finishing by bike, go the whole way by boat, or cycle the entire distance. Any option gives you varied scenery with vineyards and open plains. The route is about 40km if cycling the full way, or shorter if combining with the boat.

    Take the train from Krems to Tulln, then cycle your final stage into Vienna by crossing the Danube Island. Once you're in Austria's capital, you could check out the Prater with its famous Ferris wheel, haunted house and wax museum. If you prefer something different, walk along Mariahilfer Straße for shopping and grab a café break, or visit Schönbrunn Zoo instead. About 30km of easy riding caps off your Danube journey.

    Everything was so well organised we could just relax and ride the bikes. We hired bikes and they were in great condition and gave us no problems- I would definitely recommend this holiday. The accomodation was excellent too.
