Self-Guided Cycling Tours & Trips
Cycling opens up countries in ways other transport just doesn’t. Head to European vineyards in France or Italy, Japan's cherry blossoms in spring, and countryside that reveals itself at pedaling speed. Routes span continents, whether you're drawn to wine regions, rolling hills, or seasonal blooms. The pace lets landscapes sink in rather than blur past windows.

Tour was fantastic from beginning to end. It was self-guided but we had all the support we needed - every hotel and add-on location expected us, luggage transport went off without a hitch, and we had plenty of guidance towards bike shops and repair help (although we never needed it). The route was easy to follow and manageable from a car traffic perspective and the cities we were in were just as fantastic as advertised. I couldn't recommend a bike tour enough as a way to travel Emilia Romagna and, if you do, it must be with Cycle Europe!

What our customers ask about Self-Guided Cycling Tours & Trips
When is the best time to book a self-guided cycling tour?
Weather really shapes the best cycling months. If you're heading to Mediterranean spots like Tuscany, plan for April through June or September through October when temperatures stay comfortable at 68-77°F (20-25°C). For northern routes like Berlin to Copenhagen, summer is your friend - book between June and August when it's around 72°F (22°C). The Scotland Speyside route runs April through September to skip the rough winter weather. Book about 2-3 months before you want to go, especially if you're planning a summer trip when these tours fill up fast.
How much daily cycling is involved on these tours?
Most days you'll cover between 19 and 37 miles (30-60 kilometers). Take the Moselle path - you'll bike about 28 miles (45 kilometers) each day. The Munich Lakes tour can stretch up to 53 miles (85 kilometers) on bigger days. One cyclist who did the Andalucia tour shared: "Days varied from 3-4 hours to 6-7 hours of cycling, allowing plenty of time to explore villages and attractions along the way."
What type of accommodation can I expect on self-guided cycling tours?
You'll sleep in a mix of nice 3-4 star hotels and local guesthouses. On the Pisa to Cinque Terre route in Tuscany, you get spots like the Hotel Repubblica Marinara in Pisa and the beachfront Hotel Palace in Viareggio. The Speyside tour in Scotland puts you up in cozy B&Bs and historic spots like The Lanterna in Castelnuovo. The places know what cyclists need - they'll have safe spots to store your bike and they're right on your route.
What's typically included in a self-guided cycling tour package?
The basics come standard: your room, breakfast each day, maps and directions, moving your bags between hotels, and a phone number to call if you need help. Some tours add nice extras. The Ticino Lakes tour includes 5 nights in 4-star hotels and tickets to see Bellinzona's castles. In Munich, they throw in a traditional Bavarian veal sausage breakfast. If your route needs a ferry crossing, like between Berlin and Copenhagen, that's covered too.
How does navigation work on self-guided cycling tours?
You'll get everything you need to find your way - maps, GPS tracks, and detailed directions. The Speyside tour gives you turn-by-turn instructions through the Scottish countryside, while the Moselle path offers both a navigation app and paper maps. One cyclist told us: "the GPS files worked great and paper maps helped identify local points of interest." Most routes stick to bike paths, quiet back roads, and trails that are well marked with signs.
How is luggage handled during self-guided cycling tours?
You just carry what you need for the day - your main bags get moved to your next hotel. On the Moselle path, they move your bags between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM, and you can bring as much as you want. The Rhine Romance tour makes sure your stuff is waiting at each hotel before you get there. As one happy cyclist said: "luggage transfers worked perfectly, arriving at each destination on time."
