  My trip with Catours was excellent and well organised. It was at 'luxury' level and very expensive for what it was but I had the security of knowing it was all organised and safe for my first trip to Central America. The trip to Tortuguero was like a proper guided tour and our guide Alex was excellent, managing logistics, spotting animals and looking after the guests. We could book additional trips with the hotel which included transport, or it can be cheaper to organise it yourself and pay extra for a boat taxi (in this case) or an Uber elsewhere. The rest of the trip to the Fortuna and Monteverde areas was not guided. Catours had just booked the hotels, transport and a couple of activities. Ana Rojas in their office was excellent, helping me to modify the activities due to my daughters issues with walking, although I ended up paying twice as I was the only person on the volcano hike and there is a trip minimum. What I would like the company to do is to put in more accurate timings into the schedule and give the options for additional activities in the available time slots. I spent a lot of time researching activities on Trip Advisor. We travelled in rainy season (August) but had enough dry times for most activities and a couple of beautiful sunny days (out of 8). However, we couldn't see the Arenal Volcano, due to cloud but this can happen in dry season too. Do take a poncho, especially in Tortuguero and Monteverde where wet clothes do not dry due to the humidity and lack of aircon in the hotels. Coats don't stop your bottom half and shoes getting soaked. The hotels were all lovely, as was the transport and drivers. Beware - taxis will charge a lot to take you to e.g. Mistico bridges as they 'wait' for you to finish. Use an Uber. However, book it in separate trips. Many big operations e.g. hanging bridges/zip lining etc have buildings with wifi so you can book one on the way back. My Uber driver added the stops to one big journey. Although, he left and did jobs between my pick-ups, it registered as one long trip with hours of waiting. I came home to a £140 bill for the morning ! You will need a little Spanish or Google translate as the drivers speak varying amounts of English. However, I felt safe travelling alone using Ubers in Costa Rica. In general, it is as safe a country to travel around as at home.Show more
