I thought ten days would be plenty. By the end, I was already looking at the calendar wondering where the time had gone. If you're looking for a first proper introduction to Morocco, I'd recommend taking the longer route rather than trying to squeeze everything into a few days. Having ten days gave us enough breathing room to actually enjoy the country instead of simply ticking places off a list. What made this trip special for me was the variety. One day we were walking through an old medina surrounded by history, another we were crossing mountain landscapes, and later we were standing in the middle of the Sahara with nothing but sand and sky around us. Morocco never really felt repetitive. I particularly enjoyed the slower moments between the major stops. Having a private vehicle meant we could pull over for a photo, stop for tea or spend a little longer somewhere that caught our attention. Those small things made the trip feel much more personal. The Sahara was unforgettable, but I wouldn't say it was the only highlight. I loved discovering the imperial cities and seeing how different each one felt. The Atlas Mountains were another favorite, especially the quieter landscapes and villages away from the busier tourist areas. There was also a lot of very good food involved, which I certainly wasn't complaining about. By the end of the trip, I had developed a serious attachment to Moroccan breakfasts and mint tea.Show more

Photography has always been my excuse to travel. I usually choose destinations because of the landscapes, the light, and the people, and Morocco had been on my list for years. What I didn't expect was how quickly everything changed. Every morning felt like I had arrived in a completely different place. One day I was photographing the narrow streets of the imperial cities, full of colors and small details. The next day I was surrounded by cedar forests, and before long I was watching the wind reshape the dunes of the Sahara. I probably stopped the car more than anyone should. Sometimes it was just because I noticed an old man walking with his donkey, a group of children playing football in a village, or the afternoon light hitting a kasbah in a way that lasted only a few minutes. I never felt guilty asking for "just one more stop," and that made a huge difference. The Atlas Mountains were another surprise. I expected beautiful views, but I didn't expect the roads themselves to be part of the experience. Around almost every corner there was another panorama that made me reach for my camera. The desert was the only place where I actually stopped taking pictures for a while. After sunset, I put the camera away and simply enjoyed the silence. Sometimes you realize that not every memory needs to live on a memory card. Looking through my photos after returning home, I noticed something interesting. My favorite pictures weren't necessarily of the famous places. They were the little moments in between—the roadside tea stop, a smiling shop owner, the morning light coming through the window of a riad, or a shepherd crossing the road in front of us. That's probably what I'll remember most about Morocco. Not just the landmarks, but everything that happened between them.Show more
