would we rent a gravel vs road bike for Fiordland & south coast gravel . I mostly road bike 50-60 miles / 1000 meters so I'm not sure if this trip would be too difficult ? I am also looking at Marlbough/ west coast trip, and Alps to ocean. They all sound great! Do you recommend one for me in November. Do any trips go where Lord of Rings/ Hobbit was filmed?

    • Adventure SouthOperatorWritten January 2026

for the Fiordland & South Coast Gravel trip, we would definitely recommend a gravel bike, as the riding is entirely on gravel surfaces. We hire Merida Silex gravel bikes for these trips.

Another great option for you could be our Great West Coast Cycle trip, which is a road biking tour.

The Alps to Ocean and many of our other tours focus on cycle trails, which offer a different riding style again, so it really comes down to your personal preference and the type of riding you enjoy most.

In terms of distances, one of the great things about our trips is that you always have a support vehicle with you throughout the journey. If there's ever a section of riding you'd prefer to sit out, you can simply hop into the van and rejoin the group later.

We don't run any specific Lord of the Rings–themed tours, but many scenes from the movies were filmed in the Otago region around Queenstown, where several of our tours either start or finish.

    • Adventure SouthOperatorWritten January 2023

Yes, this is a 'roadie trip' and you are welcome to bring your own bike. As long as it is fit for purpose and serviced prior to the trip. On the road cycling tours our Merida Silex 300 road bikes have wider 32mm tyres and disc brakes which are safer and better suited to NZ road conditions seal/chip.

Would like to know The best time of The year to Ride in NZ and more info thanks

    Tour Details
    • Adventure SouthOperatorWritten November 2022

New Zealand has a largely temperate climate meaning mild temperatures, moderately high rainfall, and many hours of sunshine throughout the country. March to May are New Zealand's autumn months. While temperatures are a little cooler than summer, the weather is usually very settled during these months and it is possible to swim in some places until April. While New Zealand's native flora is evergreen, there are many introduced deciduous trees and colourful changing leaves make autumn a scenic delight, especially in regions such as Central Otago and Hawke's Bay, which are known for their autumn splendour.

    • Adventure SouthOperatorWritten September 2022

Our Southern Coast Cycle Trip was developed to utilise the great views and quieter roads of Otago and Southland. The idea is to get the great roadie experience but be away from high traffic areas. If you are riding regularly then you'll love the mix of rolling terrain through farmland, forest, and coastal settlements. It is not mountainous, but there are still some hills. Riding days vary between 40 km and 150km. Should you wish to do less on any particular day, guides will ensure guests ride the best sections. We also offer e-bikes as an option for guests.
