Itinerary
- Day 1
Bari
You'll arrive in Bari and start by exploring Bari Vecchia, the old town, either on your own or with a guide. Take time to walk along the waterfront where you can watch fishermen going about their work. The Cathedral of San Nicola, dedicated to the city's patron saint, is a key stop while you're wandering through the atmospheric streets.

- Day 2
Cassano delle Murge to Santeramo
After transferring from Bari to Cassano delle Murge, you'll head into the Mesola forest with its Mediterranean vegetation. Most of the hike follows gravel roads through Pineta Galletti, a pine forest, as you make your way toward Santeramo. If you need a shorter route, there's an option to cut about 5 km from the end of the hike.

- Day 3
Santeramo to Altamura
You'll hike through Murgia National Park, walking through rolling hills with nice views and spotting flocks of sheep along the way. Midway through, you'll stop at Masseria Scalera to taste homemade cheese and get a feel for farm life. From there, continue on to Altamura, entering through Porta Bari and walking down Corso Federico II di Svevia past the cathedral.

- Day 4
Altamura to Gravina in Puglia
The hike takes you across open terrain toward Gravina in Puglia, a town built uniquely above a gorge. Once there, you can explore the underground town carved into soft tuff rock over centuries, with stone churches and ancient campsites. The local group Gravina Sotterranea offers guided tours if you want to go deeper into these underground spaces.

Gravina in Puglia to Borgo Picciano - Masseria La Fiorita
You'll cross the stone bridge over the gorge and hike along the ancient Via Appia, the historic road that once connected Rome to Brindisi. Along the way, you'll pass the archaeological site of Botromagno. After lunch in Borgo Picciano, you'll get a transfer to Masseria la Fiorita, Giuseppe's family farm, where you can spend the afternoon with the family and their animals.

Landmarks Via Appia Botromagno - Day 6
Lago San Giuliano to Matera
Following breakfast, you'll transfer to Lake San Giuliano to start your hike. The terrain gets quite hilly, especially in the final section as you climb up to Matera's hillside setting. The route builds up to your arrival at the Sassi, Matera's historic district known for its distinctive ancient architecture and its designation as European Capital of Culture in 2019.
