Itinerary
- Day 1
Vienna to Bologna
You'll arrive in Bologna this morning and head straight into the historic center to see the leaning towers and San Petronio basilica. Piazza Maggiore with its fountain gives you a good sense of the city's layout and character. After grabbing traditional Bolognese lunch at a local trattoria, you'll transfer to your hotel in Montecatini Terme, which is where you'll stay for the next week.

- Day 2
Montecatini Terme to Florence
The train takes you to Florence's center in the morning. You'll spend time with the Baptistery and cathedral, checking out Brunelleschi's dome and Giotto's bell tower. From there, walk to Ponte Vecchio and then head to Santa Croce church to see the frescoes and tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo. In the afternoon, you'll have a guided tour at the Uffizi Gallery with reserved entry to see major works up close.

- Day 3
San Gimignano and Volterra
After breakfast, you'll head up to San Gimignano and walk through the medieval town to see those distinctive towers. The Romanesque basilica has remarkable frescoes worth spending time on. Later you'll drive to Volterra and explore Piazza dei Priori and the Communal Palace. The Archaeological Museum there holds one of Italy's most important Etruscan collections, so plan an hour or so to look through it.

- Day 4
Pisa
You'll take the train to Pisa and go straight to Piazza dei Miracoli to see the cathedral, baptistery, and the famous Leaning Tower. Climbing the tower is up to you. Check out the Palazzo dei Cavalieri with its carved facade. Your afternoon is free to wander around the city at your own pace. If you're interested in frescoes, the Museum delle Sinopie shows impressive work from the Campo Santo cemetery.

- Day 5
Siena
Siena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still feels medieval and Gothic throughout. Start at Piazza del Campo and explore the cathedral with its mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, inlaid floors, and frescoes. You'll have a longer lunch break here to relax and take in the city. If you want to see the Maestà, the Cathedral Museum is optional but worth it for a piece of Sienese school art.

- Day 6
Montepulciano and Val d'Orcia
Montepulciano sits at about 600 meters elevation and you'll walk the Corso through Renaissance palaces from the main square to the highest point. Stop at a local wine cellar to taste Vino Nobile. The Madonna di San Biagio church at the edge of town is a honey-colored Renaissance building that's worth the trip down. After that, you'll have time to look out at the Val d'Orcia landscape with its rolling hills and conical peaks.
