  1. Day 1

    Amsterdam

    You'll arrive in Amsterdam by 3:30 pm and board your ship by 5 pm. Before heading to the dock, there's time to walk around this 700-year-old city and take in the elegant architecture, check out the local cafés, and browse the marketplace. Dinner happens onboard, where you can start getting to know your ship and fellow travelers. After that, you'll cruise overnight heading toward Rotterdam.

    Rotterdam

    In Rotterdam, you have several directions to go. Your Adventure Host can lead a walking tour, or you might head out to Keukenhof to see over seven million tulips and bulbs on display. The Erasmus Bridge and Rotterdam's modern architecture are worth checking out if you're interested in design. Grab some Dutch snacks by the harbor, bike around if you like, and get back for a harbor cruise and evening show on the ship.

    Antwerp

    Antwerp is yours to explore, and you've got options. You can join an active bike tour, take a guided walk through the city that includes the Grote Markt and Cathedral of Our Lady, or visit a local brewery instead. If you'd rather venture out further, there's an optional excursion to Brussels available. Otherwise, spend time on your own trying Belgian waffles, checking out the diamond district, or wandering around. The ship sails overnight to Ghent.

    Ghent's got two main routes. Either bike around with your Adventure Host or take a canal boat that heads to a local brewery where they explain how Gruut beer comes together. If you want something bigger, there's a full-day guided trip to Bruges where you can walk through canals, see the 13th-century belfry, and check out medieval buildings before returning to Ghent for an orientation walk.

    This morning starts with a guided walk through Middelburg's old streets and canals, passing the 15th-century Gothic Town Hall and learning about the spice trade era. After that you'll have free time to try local food and treats. Later, you can either sail or bike to Veere, a historic town from the 15th and 16th centuries, for another guided walk. The day ends back on the ship with a food and beer pairing dinner before cruising to Willemstad.

    Amsterdam

    Amsterdam's canal system is the focus today. You can either go on an early morning walk along the waterways or join a guided canal cruise that passes by the Golden Age mansions. After that, there's a Dutch beer experience to try. In the afternoon, you'll decide between joining optional guided excursions or exploring on your own through the colorful streets, galleries, and shops. You'll dock overnight in Amsterdam.

    Include entry to sights not just walk around them. Local guides were good, but the ship board guy, directed us to wrong place to catch shuttle bus back to ship from Amsterdam and we were nearly abandoned. Maps of towns we are to walk thru and emergency contact cards should be in rooms each night not just on a desk obscured by the crowd picking up their listening devices. More free time to explore. Felt like every minute was programmed. Not enough time to rest.

    We had a great time! From the start, it was a wonderful experience. The transfer from airport to ship was helpful. We would have had a difficult time making the transition, but the staff were extremely helpful. Once we arrived, we were warmly greeted and given the opportunity to rest a little while our room was prepared. The meals were first rate. The staff was wonderful and accommodating. They met our every need. We enjoyed the evening entertainment, as well as the planned excursions. We were sad to leave at the end of our trip, but would definitely consider another cruise with Avalon again.

    I would suggest allowing more of the excursions to be in the afternoon so that people are not getting up at 7:30 AM in the mornings and have breakfast to make the bus at 8:30 AM. A later start time and a boxed lunch would be a nice change of pace!

    The crew, ship and meals were all very good. There was an issue with the wording of one of the tours that I paid an additional amount for and I will take it up with Avalon. Also with the room description I paid extra for the wall to wall windows. It was useless to have done that. Most of the time we were right next to another boat, or to a wall and there was no way we would even keep the curtains opened.
