- Day 1
Keflavík to Reykjavík
You'll pick up your rental car at Keflavík International Airport and head out across the Reykjanes Peninsula. The drive takes you through lava fields where moss covers the dark rocks, with mountains visible in the distance. It's a dramatic introduction to Iceland's landscape before you arrive in Reykjavík for your first night. The whole drive gives you a sense of how geologically unique this country is.

- Day 2
Reykjavík to Vík
This morning you'll drive south along the coast hitting several waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss lets you walk right behind the water, which is quite the experience. Skógafoss comes next with its powerful flow, then you'll head to Dyrholaey's rocky point. From there, Reynisfjara's black sand beach and basalt columns are waiting, plus those strong Atlantic waves crashing in. You'll finish the day in Vik, a small village with a distinctive church sitting above everything else.

- Day 3
Vík to Höfn
You're driving east toward Vatnajökull National Park today. Stop in the Skaftafell area to see the glacier views and Svartifoss, which has basalt columns framing it nicely. The real highlight is Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where icebergs float around in the water, and then they wash up on Diamond Beach. After that, you'll continue to Höfn, a fishing town where the local specialty is lobster. It's a good spot to grab a meal and settle in for the night.

Höfn to Egilsstaðir
Today takes you through the East Fjords, where steep mountains drop right into narrow fjords. You'll pass through fishing villages like Djúpivogur, which has art installations and birds around, and Fáskrúðsfjörður with its French fishing history. The drive continues through green valleys with rivers running through them until you reach Egilsstaðir, the largest town out here. It's also where you can access Lake Lagarflót if you want to explore.

Egilsstaðir to Akureyri
You're heading west through northeast Iceland's black desert landscape toward Lake Mývatn. Dettifoss is Europe's most powerful waterfall and the sound is intense. At Lake Mývatn itself, you'll see the geothermal area with steaming vents and boiling mud. There's a nature bath option if you want to relax, and you can hike the Hverfjall volcano or walk through Dimmuborgir's lava maze. Before reaching Akureyri for the night, stop at Goðafoss waterfall. Akureyri is the largest town in the north and a good base.

- Day 6
Akureyri to Borgarfjörður
From Akureyri, you're heading west to Skagafjörður valley, known for horses and Viking connections. The Icelandic Emigration Center in Hofsós tells immigration stories, and Glaumbaer has old turf houses to explore. After crossing the highland road, you'll enter Borgarfjörður. In Reykholt, see where medieval historian Snorri Sturluson lived and check out his geothermal pool and museum. Then visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, plus the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. End at the Settlement Centre in Borgarnes to learn about Iceland's early history.

- Day 7
Borgarfjörður to Reykjavík
You're heading south to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO site where Iceland held its oldest parliament and where you can actually see the rift between two tectonic plates. There are walking trails to explore, the Almannagja fissure, and Öxarárfoss waterfall. Next, you'll visit the Geysir geothermal area where Strokkur shoots boiling water up about 30 meters high every few minutes. Then see Gullfoss waterfall dropping into a deep gorge. From there, it's back to Reykjavík for your last night.
