Explore the quieter western region. Get your best coastal photos at Akranes lighthouse after climbing its 60 steps. Visit Deildartunguhver hot spring but stick to marked paths for safety. Plan about 2-3 hours to see the geothermal area.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Join a morning nature cruise in Breiðafjörður Bay. Pack very warm clothes for the boat. Look for puffins between June and August. Stop for lunch in Stykkishólmur and try their local fish soup. Get photos of Mount Kirkjufell in the afternoon light.
- Days 6-7
South Coast (Vík Area)
Stay in Vík to explore the south coast. Start with Seljalandsfoss waterfall and bring a rain jacket if you want to walk behind it. Be careful at Reynisfjara black sand beach and watch the waves. Spend about 90 minutes at Skógar Museum looking at traditional turf houses.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Drive 2.5 hours east to Jökulsárlón. Take the first amphibian boat tour around 9:30 AM when the water is calm. Bring extra warm clothes since it's especially cold by the lagoon. You might spot seals near the ocean channel.

Return to Reykjavík via Reykjanes Peninsula
Visit local wool studios to watch natural dyeing. Book an evening slot at Sky Lagoon instead of Blue Lagoon to avoid crowds and maybe catch sunset. Bring flip-flops since the ground gets hot.

Departure
Leave 3 hours for getting to and through the airport from Reykjavík. Most US flights leave in the afternoon.

We had a well planned self drive around Iceland. Every question I had beforehand and during the trip was quickly responded to. Highlights were zodiac tour of lagoon, glacier hike and puffins. If I were to do again I would add the westman islands to the tour to see puffins and other birds.
I thought the entire tour was outstanding. Our guide, Jens, showed us everything we could want to see. I love that the accommodations were mostly in small guest houses and hotels. It felt like we were visiting with long lost relatives. We got to see so many features, fjords and waterfalls, and so many things that I can't even list them all. We were introduced to some Iceland horses, and fed them horse candy. Jens was very accommodating to my walking issues, and advised about some of the trails. Every couple of days, he would read us a folk tale about one of the features we saw. We even had the skies clear one night for us to be able to see the Aurora. It was amazing. All in all, I would highly recommend this tour, especially with Jens as a guide.
