You'll arrive in Iceland and head to Akureyri on your own, though an optional transfer can be arranged if you need it. Later in the afternoon, you'll board your expedition ship, meet the crew, and get settled into your cabin. Watch the sky during evening hours because the Northern Lights could make an appearance.

Grimsey Island or Mývatn Excursion
What you do today depends entirely on weather. The captain and expedition leader will decide the best course of action. If things look good, you're headed to Grimsey Island for a Zodiac landing and guided hike across the Arctic Circle at coordinates 66:34° north. Otherwise, you might sail toward Húsavík and cross Skjafandi Bay for whale watching. If weather won't cooperate, there's a bus excursion to Mývatn instead to see volcanoes, waterfalls, and geothermal features with hiking, then back to the ship in Akureyri by afternoon.

You'll eat lunch on the ship, then sail through Skjafandi Bay in the afternoon where you might see humpback and minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, or harbor porpoises. Plan B, if weather forces the ship to stay put, means a bus trip to the Tjörnes peninsula to check out local birds and geology, then on to Ásbyrgi, the horseshoe-shaped gorge with hiking as the focus. An optional thermal pool soak with fjord views might happen on the way back.
