Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Trier

You'll arrive in Trier, which happens to be Germany's oldest city, and have time to explore what makes it historically significant. The Porta Nigra is the main draw here, a massive Roman gate that's been standing for centuries. After checking that out, you can wander through the Roman excavations scattered around the city to get a sense of what was here before. St. Peter's Cathedral is worth seeing too, then take a leisurely stroll through the old town streets. This first day is really about getting oriented before you start the hiking portion of your trip tomorrow.

  2. Day 2

    Trier to Bullay

Your hiking week kicks off by crossing the Moselle and heading up toward those colorful sandstone cliffs in the Trier city forest. The trails here run at higher elevation, so you'll get deep views of the Moselle valley as you walk. During the hike, you'll pass through Biewer and work through the Eifel foothills, moving between forests and plateaus. Later, you reach Ehranger Kanzel and follow the Kyll river toward Schweich. By evening, catch a train to Bullay, a charming wine town where you'll settle in for the night.

    Bullay to Bullay

Start the morning riding the Mosel wine railway, which gives you a scenic introduction to the region before you hike. You'll cross Germany's longest hanging viaduct and pass through the art-deco town Traben-Trabach. Then the real climbing begins as you head steeply up to Grevenstein castle. The Franzosensteig trail is the highlight here, featuring spiral staircases and via ferrata sections through old ruins. The views down to the river are exceptional. From there, you walk the Kirster Grat ridge to Enkirch, passing through vineyards. Back in Bullay by late afternoon, a Mosel wine tasting wraps up your day nicely.

After descending and crossing the river at Neef, you climb Calmont to see Europe's steepest vineyard, with slopes reaching up to 55 degrees. It's impressive stuff. You'll walk past a Roman hilltop settlement and stop at the Galgenlay Pavilion before catching a train to Cochem, your base for the next couple nights.

You'll hike along the riverbanks near Fankel-barrage and take a break in Bruttig before ascending through the Kabainerbach ravine. The path then goes through hillside vineyards and along the black rocky Brauselay cliffs. In the afternoon, you'll switch gears and take a boat ride on the Moselle, floating past Cochem imperial castle from the water, which gives you a completely different perspective on the landscape.

Hotel choices were great, walking routes were challenging at times due to gain in elevation but what goes up must come down so that helped! Beautiful to experience the peace and tranquility of the countryside.

Highly recommend this trip. The days can be long but the views are worth it. Most of the route is paved so you can probably get away with hiking shoes or trail running shoes. There is luggage transfer available but I didn't need it. The route from Unken to Waidring could be updated but I was able to find an alternate route with the map. Before you start you're given the full itinerary with a navigation system on the app as well as paper copies of everything.

Well organized, no hiccups, beautiful scenery, good exercise (!), great hotels. I've enjoyed the trip quite a lot, there's nothing much to add here, really. One minor thing is that there was a bus pickup location specified towards the end of one of the hikes, it would've been nice to get picked up given you're in unfamiliar territory rather than fumbling your way around and hoping you get on the right bus and go where you're supposed to.
