  We have a traveller interested in booking the Top Gear Vietnam Motorbike Tour from Hanoi to Saigon on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and they have a question regarding licence requirements. The traveller holds a full car licence but only a learner's permit for motorcycles. They plan to obtain an International Driving Permit, but would like to know whether this would cover motorbike riding on the tour? Could you please advise whether this is sufficient to participate, or if a full motorcycle licence is required?

    In terms of the traffic laws, foreigners need to have either appropriate Vietnamese licenses or International Driver's Permit under the 1968 convention to ride legally in Vietnam, however, the fact is that people are still able to ride motorcycle tours in VN without IDP as long as they are riding well & not going to make troubles to themselves and other locals. of course, they must be responsible for paying a fine to the police once they randomly pull over. To help our customers ride legally, we can also help them convert their local car/motorcycle license into such a called IDP under the 1968 convention if they are unable to make it from their home country

    we have no group tour available in Oct yet but if you dare signing up the trip first then there would be other people following up sequently. To start this tour, you must fly to Hanoi - our capital then will finish the trip in Saigon. Yes, if you want to book this trip, you are requested to deposit to secure your trip

    The cost for 2 people sharing 1 twin/double room at standard hotels cum homestay and riding geared scooters of 110cc or automatic ones of 125cc is US$ 1990/person
    
    The surcharge to upgrade to manual dirt bikes of Honda XR 150cc, CRF 250cc, Honda CRF 300cc and CF 450cc is US$ 18/bike/day, US$ 30/bike/day and US$ 40/bike/day and US$ 45/bike/day respectively
    
    If you want a support van to carry luggage on tour, the rental cost for this extra service is US$ 130/day (Including a driver & gasoline + toll fee)

  I'm looking to do a guided motorcycle tour of Vietnam and I understand that riding legally there without a Vietnamese licence comes with problems. Especially no insurance company will cover in the event of an accident.

    + Vietnam accepts Vietnamese licenses and the International Driver's Permit under the 1968 convention
    + You're regular tourists then you can not obtain Vietnamese licenses except for those who are diplomats, high-skilled engineers, permanent residents
    + But you can convert your local license into such a called IDP under the 1968 convention and we can help you this if you want
    + We can also suggest you suitable insurance companies to purchase essential insurance packages before traveling to Vietnam

    The quotes are based on the regular scooters of 110cc or automatic ones of 125cc, however, you can still upgrade to dirt bikes of Honda XR 150cc, CRF 250cc, CRF 300cc or the ADV Honda CB 500cc if you want. Of course, you can also opt staying at single room with a little supplement but won't have to share the room with another outsider. Yes, you'd better to have an International Driving License to ride legally in Vietnam. This is just an easy-going motorcycle tour and requirements for riding gears are just simple. You can just ride with casual wears such as sporty shoes, jeans, shirts even shorts and we'll provide you helmets, gloves, elbow + knee pads

    The surcharge for CRF 250cc & CRF 300cc is US$ 35/bike/day and US$ 45/bike/day respectively. And the supplement for a single room throughout the trip is US$ 495.

  Do you pack light on this tour? Do I need to be able to carry my own stuff in a backpack for example? Is protective gear supplied or bring my own?

    Yes, you must pack light & carry all stuffs in a backpack by yourself on the back of the your bike. We will provide you basic riding gears of helmet, elbow + knee pads & gloves if you need

    To ride motorcycles legally in Vietnam, you are recommended to have either Vietnamese licenses or the International Driver's Permit under the 1968 convention. However, if you can not convert your local license into such a called IDP, we can help you convert this at the cost of US$ 145, US$ 160 & US$ 190 for 3, 5 & 10-year validity respectively
