Do we get to explore the inside of Dracula's castle and/or other castles?

For this tour, on Day 3, we visit both Peles Castle and Bran Castle; also known as Dracula's Castle. We also visit the Gothic Corvin Castle on Day 5. It is important to note that many of the castles and museums charge a camera fee. You should allow approximately £15.00 for this.

I'm interested in the tour solo traveller on sharing basis for 13th June. Please send me your confirmation and cost with discounts applicable.

I just need to know what will the temperature be like between 13th june till the end of the month to help me finalise.

Is it possible to upgrade the two star accommodation at all? We prefer our own Ensuite too.

All accommodation on this tour have their own ensuite. With regards to the two nights at the basic hotel, regretfully we are unable to upgrade these before hand. Whilst you are at the accommodation, you may be able to upgrade the room directly with the stay. Some of the hotels and guesthouses used on this trip have bedrooms on multiple floors with narrow staircases and no lifts, so we recommend packing light, as you will need to carry your own bags up and down the stairs. On days five and six in Belgrade, we'll use one of 2 hotels that are both in the same chain (Mr President Hotel and the Regent Palace Hotel). They are chosen for their central location and are comfortable although the décor in the rooms is a bit old fashioned. On days 12 and 13 of this trip we will stay in Balchik, where we have the unique experience of staying in rooms in the old villas that formed part of the Black Sea Summer Palace of Queen Marie of Romania. This accommodation is rated as simple as the villas are historic and the décor is quite dated. All rooms are en suite and vary in terms of size and décor. Rooms won't be serviced on second night of our stay. Once the day visitors leave we have the botanical garden palace grounds to ourselves to explore. There is a restaurant in the grounds and other bars and restaurants are just a short walk away along the coast.

Peles, Bran and Corbin castles, the Iron gate gorge boat trip, Varna & Balchik on Black Sea coast. The Palace resort at Balchik is amazing but rooms a bit tired and need updating, also we had no water on second day but the restaurant sold me a bottle, some of the residents were in the shower when the water stopped! It happens a lot there we are told and there are large bowls in the bathrooms so maybe there should be a warning to fill the bowls on arrival so at least you have some water if it stops while in the showerShow more

A lot of my personal highlights were from the optional trips or sights I visited during free time: - Bucharest is a fabulous, lively city with bars and restaurants and a mixture of historical buildings and museums. Really enjoyed a tour around Romain Antheneum, National Museum of Romanian History, Casa Ceausescu summer residence, drinking in the Nomad Skybar and a meal in the oldest brewery Caru' cu Bere (although over-priced). - The speed-boat trip on the river Danube to see the gigantic King Decebalus carved into the rocks was good fun. - The optional “spa trip” in Baile Herculane is fully recommended despite it being rough and ready! We took a taxi to a local hot spring, picked up some beers and nibbles enroute and enjoyed the evening. When you get too hot you walk down and cool off in the river. Sitting with the local Romanians you felt very welcomed. This spa town is very run-down but you can see the grandeur of the buildings and when refurbished it will be a fabulous destination. - Veliko Tarnovo is a lively town with bars, restaurants, handicrafts and some inexpensive silver jewellery stores. The trek up to the church is in the Tsarevets Fortress is well worth the visit, with the gothic dark frescoes. A complete opposite to the gold mosaics in the Saint Sava Serbian Orthodix church in Belgrade, also a must. - Also in Belgrade, Tito’s Mausoleum is also worth a visit for the random items he was given and the history of Yugoslavia. - In your free time in Varna, definitely go and see the “gold of Varna” in the Archaeological Museum. This is 6,000 year old Thracian jewellery which was found around Varna. Really intricate and shows you where and how it was found in the tombs. - Staying in the Palace Villa Complex on the Black Sea coast was a relaxing location at the end of the holiday and there are many upmarket bars and restaurants on the promenade. Good for a bit of a pub crawl!Show more

Lots to see in Bucharest but the summer heat (40 degrees!) somewhat limited my enthusiasm for walking around. Our visit to the very interesting Transylvanian castle/stately home of Peles was nearly spoiled by a nearby car rally preventing access, but our resourceful leader managed to find a route. Later in the day, we visited the village of Bran and its heavily touristed castle (marketed as “Dracula’s castle” but nothing could be much further from the truth). Brasov and Sibiu were both interesting old towns and worth a visit but Corvin Castle, the next day, was something else – very imposing - albeit in an odd location, outside the nearby town. The later river trip (by speedboat) on the Danube, with the visit to the sculpted head of King Decebalus, made a pleasant break in our journey. In Serbia, the Roman ruins of Viminacium provided an interesting interlude before our arrival in Belgrade – where there was plenty to do and see, especially Saint Sava’s church – a copy of Istanbul’s Aya Sofia. A morning’s excursion to Novi Sad was worthwhile – a highlight being the Yugoslav museum, with Tito’s memorial and grave. Outside Sofia, the excursion to the picturesque Rila Monastery was very interesting – albeit packed with local tourists. Plovdiv was a town with a notable Roman amphitheatre and a very picturesque old quarter. Varna, on the Black Sea coast, had an interesting Ethnographic/Archaeological Museum, which was hosting a special exhibition of gold antiquities during our visit, and this was worth seeing. Whether going to this museum would have otherwise been worthwhile is debatable. The hotel in Balchik, further up the coast, was in the former palace of Queen Maria of Romania - a splendid place to stay, within reach of the beach. There were masses of tourists there during the day and during the local excursion to the fortress of Kaliakra but, after 5pm, the local tourists left and we could explore the Palace grounds in peace. Back in Bucharest, the group voted to visit the former summer residence of the Ceaucescu family – now a museum, of course, and forbiddingly lacking in homeliness. Ghastly, in fact, but possibly worth a look.Show more

Some of the hotels and guesthouses used on this trip have bedrooms on multiple floors with narrow staircases and no lifts, so we recommend packing light, as you will need to carry your own bags up and down the stairs. On days five and six in Belgrade, we'll use one of 2 hotels that are both in the same chain (Mr President Hotel and the Regent Palace Hotel). They are chosen for their central location and are comfortable although the décor in the rooms is a bit old fashioned. On days 12 and 13 of this trip we will stay in Balchik, where we have the unique experience of staying in rooms in the old villas that formed part of the Black Sea Summer Palace of Queen Marie of Romania. This accommodation is rated as simple as the villas are historic and the décor is quite dated. All rooms are en suite and vary in terms of size and décor. Rooms won't be serviced on second night of our stay. Once the day visitors leave we have the botanical garden palace grounds to ourselves to explore. There is a restaurant in the grounds and other bars and restaurants are just a short walk away along the coast.
