A fantastic trip exploring the northern villages of Chiang Mai. The hike / trek is HARD, even with some degree of fitness but so worth it! The home stay accommodations are very basic and there is no wifi but a digital detox is needed and you really get to bond with your group. I would definitely recommend this tour.

I was extremely disappointed by the Thailand Northern Hilltribes tour, and would not recommend this tour to anyone unless they could guarantee they would not be assigned Sombat Kano as their CEO. Mr. Kano seemed to just there for the transportation; he would be with the group when we rode the train to different cities/to the hotels, but as soon as we'd arrive he would disappear. He was almost never present on the activities. Usually when a tour group has activities planned, or there are a few groups doing their own activities, the guide will accompany at least one of them, but Mr. Kano would always elect to run his own errands. The result was that the tour was almost 100% self guided, with Mr. Kano present as an escort between train stations. While it was still amazing to experience Thailand, I deeply wished I had saved my money and had traveled to Thailand without G Adventures (since the experience would have essentially been the same and I would have a few hundred dollars more in my pocket). Furthermore, Mr. Kano seemed absolutely uninterested in the client’s experience. Everyone in the group had spent considerable time, effort and money to make this dream trip to Thailand possible, and wanted to get the most out of their short time here, however Mr. Kano was only concerned with what was easiest for him. When asked for dining and activity recommendations, he would consistently point to the closest option which required the least effort on his part (the best restaurants and markets in Thailand are apparently the ones either in our own hotel and across the street). For the few activities he did arrange, he consistently failed to provide crucial information (such as meet up times, how long the activities would take, and what they would entail), which cost the clients even more time and money. I cannot underscore enough how much this soured the tour experience. While I understand that for Mr. Kano being a CEO is a job and is not something he genuinely enjoys, his lack of preparation and diligence made it clear how little he cared if the clients were satisfied. He was still getting paid either way and apparently was indifferent if the clients’ time and money were wasted because of him. This attitude was made even more apparent every time he would offer to arrange taxis for us-at an incredibly inflated price. I would have been happy to pay the extra few dollars he conned out of us as a tip rather than feeling constantly cheated and taken advantage of. While I have heard good things about G Adventures from others (which I why I invested money in this trip), I have been sorely disappointed, and sincerely wish I had saved my money. I can only hope that Mr. Kano is the exception to G Adventures CEOs and not the norm.

Thanks for the feedback here Ava. I'm sorry this one CEO left a lot to be desired here. We will pass this feedback on. Kind Regards, Lyndon.

This tour was the best week I have had in my entire life. No kidding, hands down! You start in the crazy fast-paced capital Bangkok and head on a sleeper train (don't worry, they are actually pretty comfortable and nice to sleep on) up to Chiang Mai which, for me, is the best place in Thailand. Here you can do a wealth of activities which I have actually compiled in my blog post here https://alextracks.com/2017/01/09/chiang-mai-what-to-do-while-you-are-there/ The main point of this tour is the trek, which is completely insane but brilliant! The friendships and bonds you make with people because of what you experience together is something that will stay with me for a very long time. Waking up to views of the jungle with home cooked, proper Thai food, which is some of the tastiest stuff you will ever eat! Pure magic, and for the price tag, it is a no-brainer! Keep tracking!

The only piece of "constructive criticism" I would give is to better inform people of how cold it gets in the villages at night in the winter time. I knew it would be a bit chilly but was not remotely prepared to be sleeping in 5-10 degree celsius temperatures! If I had known ahead of time, I would have brought warmer clothes; most people on the tour seemed to be in agreement with me on this. That being said, I had a fantastic time and would highly recommend this particular tour, Willie as a guide, and G Adventures in general!

Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

  • September 14, 2016

What is the most appropriate type of luggage to bring?

We strongly recommend bringing a backpack or duffel bag, as suitcases can be cumbersome and difficult to store in buses, under seats, etc.. Keep in mind that you will normally have to carry your own luggage on and off buses and trains and up and down hotel staircases. Suitcases with wheels may not work well on dirt or cobblestone roads.

Does the tour price include flights?

We specialise in giving you the best tours from around the world, however the tours we offer do not include airfare and we do not book or advise on airfare. You will be responsible for booking your flights to meet with the group at the starting city. We do not recommend booking airfare before confirming your tour.

What are people saying about TourRadar?

The website was easy to navigate and the variety in tours was extensive. There was something for everyone of any age. I particularly liked the amount of details supplied for each tour that explained whether or not that tour was suitable for certain ages and set out clearly what to expect and what and what is not included. The booking process was simple and easy to follow making the overall experience a delight.
