Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Urumqi

You're arriving in Urumqi today, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This city sits at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and holds the distinction of being the world's farthest city from any ocean. It's a historically significant stop on the ancient Silk Road's Northern Route, so there's a lot of cultural depth here to explore over the coming days.

You can walk the scenic 12.5 km lakeside trail at your own pace, or if you want, there are optional cable car rides and lake cruises available for an extra cost. From there, you'll continue on to Fuyun to settle into your hotel for the night.

The No. 3 Mine Pit is the centerpiece here—it's over 100 meters deep and ranks as the world's largest. You'll then follow along the Irtysh Grand Canyon past notable rock formations and Shenzhong Mountain. By evening, you'll reach Burqin and head to Five-Colored Beach for sunset, where the colorful Yardang landforms create quite a visual display.

It was such an amazing trip with so much culture to experience. But China is huge, and I feel like there are still so many places I didn’t get to see—definitely a little regret there. Guess that just means I’ll have to come back next time!
