Itinerary
- Day 1
Accommodation Setup
You'll arrive at your selected hotel and get settled in for the night. This gives you time to unpack, rest up, and mentally prepare for the walking tour of the ViaFrancigena that starts tomorrow. It's a good day to grab dinner nearby and get an early night before the journey begins.
- Day 2
Saut du Day Waterfall - Orbe
Start with a hike down to Saut du Day waterfall, then follow the River Orbe through a nature reserve. After passing through Les Clees village, you'll continue into the Gorge de l'Orbe and reach the small town of Orbe by evening. The town's known for its Roman mosaics, so if you have energy left, take a quick look around before settling in.

Orbe - Romainmôtier - Watershed
Walk from Orbe toward the medieval village of Romainmôtier, where you'll see the Cluniac abbey. The route then takes you to the watershed, which is pretty interesting geographically since part of the River Nozon flows toward the Mediterranean while the other part heads to the North Sea. Two different water paths right there in one spot.

Cossonay - Saint-Sulpice - Lausanne
Follow the Venoge river starting from Cossonay and heading toward Saint-Sulpice. You'll walk both high up along ridges and down near the river itself. By afternoon you'll reach Lake Geneva, then continue through the Roman town of Vidy before arriving in Lausanne. It's a longer day with good elevation changes and water views throughout.

- Day 5
Ouchy - Lavaux Terraces
Leave from the Ouchy quays and walk along the shores of Lac Léman to Villette. After that, the path winds through the UNESCO World Heritage terraces of Lavaux with excellent views over Lake Geneva. The terraced vineyards create a distinctive landscape, and you can see across the water to the French Alps on clear days.

- Day 6
Vevey - Villeneuve - Chablais
Travel along the lake from Vevey toward Villeneuve. On the way you can stop at Tour-de-Peilz Castle if the games museum interests you, or skip it and head straight to Chillon Castle, which is worth seeing. Either way, you'll end up in the Chablais wine-growing region with plenty of vineyard scenery around you.

Train to Martigny - Sembrancher
Take a train to Martigny to start the ascent toward the Great St. Bernard Pass. The walk goes over the Les Trappistes bottleneck via a fairly steep path, then continues to the medieval village of Sembrancher. You're following the Napoleon Trail on this section, which adds historical context to the climb.

Sembrancher - Bourg-Saint-Pierre
Walk along a forest path on the left side of the river, then pick up the historic Liddes path along the right bank. You'll pass the small Notre-Dame-de-Lorette chapel during the day, and by evening reach Bourg-Saint-Pierre. The river walking keeps things pleasant, and the chapel provides a nice moment to stop and rest.

Great St. Bernard Pass Crossing
This is the most symbolic stage of the ViaFrancigena. You're walking the historic road that people have used for 2000 years traveling across Europe. Numerous archaeological sites line the ascent, especially around L'Hospitalet and the Barasson Pass. The historical weight of this section is something you'll definitely feel.

Great St. Bernard Pass - Aosta Valley
Right after crossing the pass, you begin descending into the Aosta Valley. Follow the pilgrims' path down toward Italy, passing through the small village of St. Rhémy and later the villages of Étroubles and Echevennoz. The descent gives your legs a workout, but the valley scenery is rewarding as you head into Italian territory.

Étroubles - Aosta
Walk past old irrigation canals called 'Rus' that feature both flat sections and steep descents. You'll reach Aosta by day's end, a town known for its Roman trading history and alpine setting. Take time to explore the old town once you arrive, since Aosta has real historical character from its Roman period.
