It's about 16 hours for the train ride from Hanoi to Danang. Yes food is available on the train (simple foods). It's about $80 USD extra for 1 more ticket. There are 4 tickets/cabin. So if you are 2, you need to pay extra 2 more tickets, $160 USD.

How comfortable is the sleeper train from Hanoi to Hoi An or Da Nang? Can the sleeper accommodation be upgraded? Can it be upgraded to a flight?

I am not sure how comfortable it is! I did it before and it's ok for me to sleep. But if you are difficult to sleep at night, it will be a big problem with you. Normally people take the train mainly to experience it, not mainly for a good sleep on the train. Yes you can take flight if you don't want to take the train.

  Do you have any photos of the train sleeper cabins? Is there a door on the sleeper cabins for privacy? If I booked the 2 additional berths for $160.00 USD so that all 4 berths were reserved for me, would I have my own private room?

  If we decide to fly from Hanoi to Da Nang instead of taking the train, where would we sleep that night? Would someone drive us to Hanoi Airport and would someone pick us up at Da Nang Airport, or would we need to arrange the rides? Would we book the flight to Da Nang, or would you? Would this flight be an additional cost?

  It's better to take flight same day to Danang and spend the night in Danang. Price depends on the flight you take but I think it's not much different (maybe cheaper) than you take private cabin on the train. All airport pickup & drop off are included. You will be back Hanoi from Halong at around 3pm so you can book a flight to Danang at around 6pm or later.
