Arrival

Head out to Monteverde Reserve for a 2.5-hour hike on accessible trails through the cloud forest. Watch for bird species throughout the day as you walk through this distinctive landscape.

Ometepe Island
Cross the border into Nicaragua and drive to San Jorge, then take a ferry across Lake Nicaragua to reach the volcanic island of Ometepe. You'll stop at typical villages and visit Charco Verde lagoon before arriving at your hotel on the black sand beach.

Ometepe Island to Granada
Check out the El Ceibo Museum early on. After that, head through the traditional village of Catarina for views of Apoyo Lagoon, then stop in San Juan de Oriente before driving into Granada, the oldest colonial city in the Americas. You'll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to yourself.

Granada
Walk through Granada's historic center and see important monuments on foot. By early afternoon, drive to Lake Nicaragua for a relaxing boat trip. Later, visit Masaya market, then head to Masaya volcano in the evening to see Santiago crater. You'll return to Granada for the night.

Granada to La Fortuna
Cross back into Costa Rica at the Peñas Blancas border and drive to La Fortuna at the base of the active Arenal volcano. In the evening, relax in the hotel's thermal springs.

Arenal National Park

La Fortuna to Tortuguero
Depart very early around 5:30am and head to Guapiles for a typical breakfast. Continue north by bus and boat over canals and rivers to reach your jungle lodge in Tortuguero. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool or visiting the village of Tortuguero with your guide.

Travel south by boat, passing through Limón where you might see transatlantic and cruise ships. Continue along the coast to Puerto Viejo de Limón, a small village with typical Caribbean character. Spend time on the beach or end the afternoon with a drink at a reggae bar.
