Itinerary
- Day 1
Tashkent to Nukus
Your driver picks you up from your Tashkent hotel and takes you to the airport for your flight to Nukus. Once you land, an English-speaking guide meets you at the Savitsky Karakalpakstan Art Museum, where you'll spend time looking at Soviet avant-garde pieces and traditional Karakalpak folk artifacts. After that, you head to the historic Mizdakhan Necropolis before settling into your hotel in Nukus for the evening.

- Day 2
Nukus to Aral Sea
You'll leave Nukus early for a 6-hour drive heading 400 km toward the Usturt Plateau and the Aral Sea. The route takes you through the Kungrad district, where you'll see dramatic wind-carved canyons cutting through the plateau landscape. By midday you reach Lake Sudochie, the largest artificial reservoir in the Amu Darya Delta, and then continue north past old lighthouses and gas factories. If timing works out, you'll arrive at the Aral Sea before sunset to see the water and sand in amber and violet light.

Aral Sea to Nukus
This morning you wake early to catch the sunrise, then begin crossing back over the dried seabed toward Nukus. You'll stop at the Cemetery of Ships in Muynak, which was once an oasis on the Aral Sea shore, and visit the Regional History and Aral Sea Museum to learn about how the sea changed over time. From there, you pass the Uchsai-Gas Plant with its distinctive storage towers and stop at the Gyaur-Kala Fortress, a 4th-century palace, before heading back to Nukus.

- Day 4
Nukus to Khiva
Your driver takes you 200 km to Khiva, which takes about 4 to 5 hours. Along the way you'll pass through ruins from the old Khorezm Kingdom, stopping to see the Chilpik Dakhma (Tower of Silence) and a nearby wooden frame decorated with colorful blessing straps. Next you visit Toprak-Kala, a mud-brick citadel that served as both a royal palace and military stronghold during the 1st to 5th centuries. After exploring the site, you check into your Khiva hotel.

- Day 5
Khiva
After breakfast your guide takes you through Ichan Kala, the inner city of Khiva. You'll go into the Kunya Ark fortress-residence and climb the watchtower for 360-degree views across the city, then see the Kalta Minor Minaret and two large Islamic schools: the Muhammad Aminkhan and Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasahs. You visit the small wooden gate entrance to the Juma Mosque, then walk through Tosh-Hovli Palace and the Pakhlavan Makhmud Mausoleum before finishing at the Islam Khodja Minaret, which is Khiva's tallest tower. Later your driver transfers you to Urgench Airport for your flight back to Tashkent, where you're picked up and taken to your hotel.
