Colombo
Your driver guide picks you up from Colombo airport and takes you to your hotel to settle in. After that, you'll head to Gangaramaya Temple where the architecture blends different styles in interesting ways. From there, the Colombo National Museum is next on your list before you spend the evening relaxing at Galle Face Green right by the water.

Colombo to Anuradhapura
Breakfast happens first, then you're on a 4-hour drive to see the Avukana Buddha Statue, which stands 12 meters tall and was carved from a single rock back in the 5th century. It's the tallest ancient Buddha statue on the island. After that, a 1-hour transfer takes you to Anuradhapura where you'll check into your hotel and rest for the remainder of the day.

Anuradhapura to Trincomalee
This morning starts at Mihintale, an important pilgrimage site where you'll climb 1,843 stone steps to see ruins and visit the archaeology museum. Next, about 1.5 hours of driving gets you to Kanniya Hot Springs, one of Sri Lanka's most sacred hot water sites with old monastery ruins and a stupa nearby. Later, you catch the sunset at Nilaveli Beach before heading to your Trincomalee hotel.

Trincomalee

Trincomalee to Sigiriya
A 2-hour drive takes you to Polonnaruwa Ancient City, a 12th-century site filled with ruins of old palaces, temples, and bathing pools. You'll see what's left of the Royal Palace of King Maha Parakramabahu, which used to rise seven stories but now stands as broken walls and foundations. Then about 1 hour more of driving brings you to Sigiriya and your hotel in the jungle setting.

- Day 6
Sigiriya
Sigiriya Rock Fortress sits on a 200-meter-high rock formation and you'll explore the royal water gardens below with their ponds and fountains before climbing the steep steps to see ancient frescoes. Around midday, you head to Hiriwadunna Village for a jeep or tuk-tuk tour through the countryside where locals show their handicraft work. The afternoon includes a catamaran ride on the lake before returning to your hotel.

Sigiriya to Kandy

Then you drive to Kandy for a city tour that includes the Temple of Tooth Relics, where you'll remove your shoes to see the intricate carvings and decorations inside. That evening you catch a Culture Dance Show performance.

Kandy to Nallathanniya
The morning is spent at Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, a must-see for anyone interested in plants and nature. After that, you drive toward Nallathanniya with a stop at a Tea Factory where you learn how Ceylon black tea is made, taste fresh tea, and get hands-on with tea-picking in the plantation. You'll check into your Nallathanniya hotel by late afternoon.

Nuwara Eliya to Ella
Morning hiking in Horton Plains National Park takes you through Sri Lanka's largest cloud forest with lakes and waterfalls around. The 9.4-kilometer trail (roughly 4 hours) leads to World's End with views of Baker's Falls and the surrounding landscape below. Later, your driver takes you to catch a scenic 3.5-hour train ride to Ella, considered one of the best sections on the Kandy-to-Ella line. You're picked up at the station and settled into your Ella hotel.

- Day 11
Ella to Tissamaharama
After breakfast you hike to Little Adam's Peak, starting through greenish tea plantations and climbing to the peak surrounded by forests and valleys with views of nearby Ella Rock. Then you see Rawana Falls, a 25-meter waterfall and one of the widest on the island. Later, you drive to Tissamaharama for a jeep safari in Yala National Park where an experienced guide shows you sloth bears, water buffalos, spotted deer, peacocks, and possibly elephants, slow loris, crocodiles, and Sri Lankan leopards.

You're headed to Bentota with a stop at Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring European-style houses and a white lighthouse on a rocky peninsula surrounded by sea on three sides. If you're fortunate, local newlyweds might be taking wedding photos there with the fort and Indian Ocean in the background. You'll check into your Bentota hotel later in the day.
