14 Day Sri Lanka Itinerary, incl. Sigiriya and Kandy

Negombo & Anuradhapura
Start your trip in relaxed Negombo to shake off your jet lag. Head to the UNESCO site of Anuradhapura the next day. "The ancient Buddhist ruins are incredible but go early to beat both crowds and heat" one traveler suggests. Visit the Ruwanwalisaya and Jetavanaramaya stupas in the cooler evening hours.

It's a 3-hour drive through the Knuckles Mountain Range to reach Kandy. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth around 4 PM when it's less busy. "The evening cultural dance performances near Kandy Lake are enchanting—get there 30 minutes early for good seats." Spend the night in Digana village to experience local life at a nature resort.

Head to Anuradhapura on Day 2. The drive takes about 4 hours. Get there early to see the ancient Buddhist temples before the afternoon heat. Remember to bring socks since temple floors get very hot by midday.

Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa
Stay in Sigiriya to explore the Cultural Triangle. Get to Sigiriya Rock Fortress by 7 AM to avoid crowds and heat. The climb has 1,200 steps and gets tough when it's hot. Visit Polonnaruwa's ruins the next day and take an evening safari in Minneriya National Park. See Galle Fort in the morning before it gets too hot. Walk around the walls at sunset for great photos. Finish your trip in Colombo. Leave at least 3 hours to reach the airport because traffic is unpredictable. For night flights store your bags at a day hotel and visit Pettah Market or the National Museum.
