Start in Asakusa to see Senso-ji Temple and its Thunder Gate, then head to Fukagawa Fudo-do Temple for the morning fire service where you'll hear sacred chanting and taiko drums. After grabbing lunch, you'll go to Meiji Jingu shrine for some quiet time, followed by Shibuya's famous crossing and shopping areas. Plan on being on your feet for about 7 to 8 hours, so wear comfortable shoes.

A Sumida River cruise is another option if you prefer relaxing. If nature appeals to you, Hamarikyu Gardens, Hakone National Park, Nikko, or Kamakura are all within reach as optional visits. Mount Fuji might be visible from Hakone if the weather cooperates, and early morning or late afternoon gives your best chance. During peak seasons like March through April or October through November, getting reservations for these spots can be really tough.

You'll spend roughly 30 minutes watching the macaques, then head to Nagano. Before settling in, you'll visit Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples dating from the 7th century. You'll visit the Peace Memorial Park and museum at the 1945 A-bomb hypocentre. By evening, try okonomiyaki, a local savory pancake cooked on a hot plate, and you'll notice Hiroshima's style uses layered ingredients rather than mixing everything together.

The relaxed island has freely roaming deer in its streets and the iconic red torii gate that looks like it's floating on water when the tide comes in. Visit the Buddhist Daisho-in Temple to climb steps and spin prayer wheels that are believed to provide spiritual blessings. Check out the 16th-century Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built over the sea. If you enjoy hiking, Mt. Misen offers 2 to 2.5 hour walks with sea views and wild monkeys, or take the cable car for a quicker 20 to 30 minute walk up to the observatory.

The tea master will guide you through making your own tea and explain the process. Your afternoon is free to explore Kyoto's temples, gardens, and geisha district on your own. Overall this trip was good, some confusion due to the guide never having led this tour before. She could have used a bit more coaching, her mentor was not very good in training her to lead a group of people, not her fault. Staying in a monastery was interesting but the home stay was a bust. Sleeping on the floor with a 4 inch mat is for high school kids, not retirees. The "home stay" meal was also a disappointment. Stayed at a new place that didn't include dinner so we went to a local restaurant that gave everyone a bento box dinner that included 5 wafer thin slices of beef that you could almost see through over slightly warm rice. After dinner, everyone went to the local 7-11 to buy more food - shame on Explore! Not much personal time and lots of quick walking to make trains, buses, trams. Pretty rushed.

    Asked on October 18th, 2025

Where can I find the updated itinerary? Could you also detail included activity day by day? I understand Explore Tour Leader is more a tour coordinator rather than a proper guide, so I would like to know if the visit to cultural sites is performed by a proper local guide. Also, please confirm that single occupancy accommodation is available for this tour.

Your Tour Leader will be on hand throughout your tour to make sure arrangements run smoothly, to organise all the local logistics and to keep you safe. There will not be a different guide at the cultural sights as our tour leaders are bursting with knowledge and can't wait to share it all with you. There are still a few single room left available on the 18th Oct 2026 departure.

My preference would be the earlier date, and that i stay a few days extra at the end. I hope that is possible. I wait for your offers and reply.

We can organise those nights at the end for you, but only if you plan to stay at the hotel the tour ends at in Osaka. If you would like us to request this too, please do let me know how many extra nights you would want to stay.

Just had a question about group bookings. I see a minimum and maximum. If we are only two, would we wait until the group is booked up by other customers?

    • Explore!OperatorWritten May 2025

It is possible to book this trip with only two people. We sell it as a group tour so we would have other guests book on the whatever departure they two of you are considering booking. Our maximum group size for this tour is 16 people.

We ask that you bring one suitcase per person (due to space in the minivan), and a day pack. In regards to weight of the suitcase, that is down to the airlines allowance - usually between 20 and 23kg.

I noticed that the tour age went to 80. I am 82 and my husband is 84. We do not use a cane or walker or any other assisted device for moving or walking. Will this be a problem on this tour?

For this trip you should note: Lots of walking and time spent on our feet on this trip. City tours are on foot and using public transport. When changing locations we walk from our accommodation to the train station, and then within the station (often up and down flights of stairs) and then at the other end to reach the hotel.
