Here's some advice for most Asian and European tours - many museums close on Mondays so please be aware this is not the fault of the operator.   Enjoyable trip in the Caucasus. Friendly drivers, but no guides, in Azerbaijan and Georgia, however excellent driver & guide in Armenia We recently booked a three-country tour through the Caucasus with Azerbaijan Guide. While the overall trip was good and we enjoyed our time, there was a clear discrepancy between what we paid for and what was actually delivered regarding our guiding services. The company's brochure stated that because we were a small group of two, we would be provided with a driver who was also a guide. This combined driver/guide service is what we paid for across all three countries, but the reality was very different. Azerbaijan: Our driver was very nice, had a great sense of humour, and shared interesting general and personal history about the country. However, he lacked historic or cultural knowledge about the specific sites we visited. At the Qobustan National Park, for example, he rushed us through the museum, claiming he would tell us all about the petroglyphs himself rather than "waste time reading about them." Yet when we reached the rocks, he literally just pointed at the petroglyphs (which he called "photos") and said, "that’s a human and that’s a goat." This was incredibly dissatisfying, especially as we could hear other group guides nearby providing rich, accurate details. When we asked other questions about other places we visited he’d refer us to Google. We also had an early start time scheduled in Sheki which meant everything we were supposed to visit was closed. Georgia: Our driver here was also incredibly friendly and fun to be around. Very funny too. However, upon meeting us, he transparently stated, "I’m not a guide." While we appreciated his honesty, this was simply not the driver/guide service we had paid for. Also I ended up having to pay for one of the included activities myself as the company he had been subcontracted by had not given him the money to pay for the jeep ride up to Gergeti Church. it was at this point that he announced “I hate my job!” We sat in his car for an hour until I said this is a waste of our time, I’ll pay! He paid me back the next day but I wonder how long we’d have sat there if I hadn’t given him the money. They didn’t pay him until that night so… Armenia: This was a completely different story and by far our favourite leg of the journey. Unexpectedly, we were provided with both a professional driver and a separate guide. Having access to genuine expertise regarding the culture, history, and background of the people completely transformed the experience and highlighted exactly what we had been missing in the first two countries. On a positive note, Artunj from Azerbaijan Guide was very attentive, communicative, and did his best to resolve day-to-day issues as they arose during the trip. He also took our feedback on board at the end of the trip. We didn’t want to tell him about the drivers at the time as we were still with them.Show more
