What are the main highlights of a 3-day tour from Puerto Maldonado?

You'll spend your time exploring beautiful Lake Sandoval in Tambopata National Reserve, where you can spot giant river otters, howler monkeys and black caimans in their natural habitat. The tour takes you to the famous Macaw Clay Lick (El Chuncho) to see hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws gathering in the early morning. You'll also get to walk through the treetops on canopy bridges 35 meters above the forest floor. One TourRadar traveler put it well: "The highlight was the trip to the Sandoval Lake. It's simply amazing. The best fun was fishing on Rio Madre de Dios."

What is the best time of year to take a 3-day tour from Puerto Maldonado?

Plan your trip between April and October during the dry season, when you'll have less rain and temperatures around 85°F (29°C). The trails in Tambopata National Reserve are easier to walk and you'll have better chances of seeing wildlife during these months. Don't worry too much if you can only visit during the wet season from November to March though - tours run year-round and the rain usually comes in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours. The temperature stays warm at about 90°F (32°C).

How do I get to Puerto Maldonado to start my 3-day tour?

Take a flight from either Lima or Cusco to Puerto Maldonado - try to arrive before 11:00 AM to make the most of your first day. Once you land, your tour will pick you up and take you to the river port. From there, it's a scenic 25-45 minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to reach your lodge, like Monte Amazonico or Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. Past travelers recommend booking morning flights so you don't miss the afternoon activities on day one.

What level of physical fitness is required for a 3-day tour from Puerto Maldonado?

You'll need to be comfortable walking for 2-3 hours at a time in hot, humid weather. The daily walks cover about 3 miles through the rainforest on uneven trails, with some steeper sections when you visit Lake Sandoval. While you don't need to be an athlete, you should be ready for regular walking in temperatures up to 85°F (29°C) with high humidity. If you plan to do the canopy walks, you'll need good balance since the walkways are 98 feet up in the trees.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on a 3-day tour from Puerto Maldonado?

The Tambopata region is rich with wildlife - you're likely to see several types of monkeys including howlers, squirrel monkeys, and capuchins. Many visitors spot macaws, toucans, and black caimans. If you're lucky, you might see the rare giant river otters at Lake Sandoval. One TourRadar traveler shared: "We saw much more wildlife than expected including a sloth up close, various monkeys, caimans, and countless bird species along the Madre de Dios River."

Are the guides knowledgeable about the Amazon rainforest?

The guides really know their stuff - they're local experts who can tell you all about the plants and animals in the Tambopata region. They speak both English and Spanish well, and can point out wildlife you might miss on your own. One TourRadar traveler mentioned: "Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the jungle, identifying countless species and sharing fascinating information about the ecosystem."

Best 3 day Tours from Puerto Maldonado

What if you meet at Puerto Maldonado, biodiversity hub, boat down Madre de Dios River to reserve, then canoe across Lake Sandoval's clear waters? Spot wildlife from the Canopy Observation Tower, witness macaws at the world's largest clay lick. Three days in the jungle changes things in ways you simply can’t imagine before you arrive.
