  To be honest if Jungle Railways was my first Intrepid trip, if someone had asked me if Intrepid is a good company for solo travelers I would have said no. Jungle Railways is simply a terrible trip. I have done some great trips with Intrepid, land based Galapagos Islands, Darwin to Broome, Highlights of Turkey are just three must do trips. But Jungle Railways, avoid this thing at all costs. There's been some mediocre trips with Intrepid in the past too, but nothing that is as poorly planned or unethically marketed as Malaysia's Jungle Railway Experience. So the words Jungle Railway. What are you picturing? Wildlife, lots of interesting plants, trees and scenery for you to see out the window or maybe the train stops and you get out from inside an historic carriage or at least a tourist purposefully built modern carriage to pass through? Probably I'm guessing? I mean one of the ladies on our trip was expecting something like Puffing Billy. There's no stream trains, even comfortable modern tourist trains with an observation car or anything. No on board commentary of where you are passing through or the history of the rail. Heck you're lucky if you get a window you can see out of. It's a public train the equivalent of a city train, that has assigned seating (why on earth Intrepid books the seats at the front of the carriage that have either no window or the windows are constantly not transparent with condensation from the repeated dumping of water that rolls down them and has long ago discovered how to seep inside for some reason from the roof throughout each day is anyone's guess). Luckily for us the train was pretty much empty (although extremely cheap to buy a ticket for a long haul trip that costs less than lunch, it is so bad and slow locals seem to avoid it), so you could move to empty seats, but even when you could see out you can't see anything other than overgrown thick jungle (likely mostly weeds). It would be impossible for any wildlife to even move in the areas visible from the tracks. It's a public commuter train where the one toilet on board that works, the locals don't really believe in flushing and the snack counter that maybe existed once is abandoned now. So you've got to bring your own food and drinks on board for these up to the whole day trips. Not that we go anywhere that has a supermarket to buy cheap snacks, lunch or other food, you're going to have to be content with the odd 7Eleven if you're lucky. On food the dining choices we had were absolutely terrible. We never had lunch or dinner anywhere that didn't have outdoor plastic chairs and tables for inside venues or at least under a roof. I'm allergic to seafood, Intrepid knew this, the guide learnt this on day 1 (why he didn't already know is anyone's guess but Intrepid has a track record of this), someone else (there was only a total of 9 or us) couldn't eat seafood either, yet where do we go on our only expedition in Kuala Lumper for our welcome dinner? A seafood restaurant amongst many other red plastic chair venues who begged for our patronage as we walked past wondering if this crappy street is what Intrepid thinks the highlight of this city is? So I got up and left, as you know I wanted to stay alive. In fact there were many meals I did this for, as we dined at replicas of the same place, over and over and over again. No variety at all. These venues have basically two choices if you didn't want the mostly seafood based Malaysian food. A chicken burger with fries, or a hamburger with fries. Now these burgers, there was always a photograph did not resemble the menu photo at all, ingredients were different. When you asked say isn't this supposed to have lettuce and pointed to the picture. They would just say we don't have lettuce. Or we don't have tomato. These establishments have clearly just Googled hamburger and put in an image. The burgers as well a ridiculously tiny (think 1/4 the size of a McDonald's cheapest burger). You'd get about ten fries.. So if you didn't want to order that, well you had to leave and find somewhere else. However this wasn't always possible. For example after leaving too early for breakfast and then enduring an uncomfortable long train journey, we get in vans that stop for us to get lunch in the middle of an industrial estate. There is nothing else there other than a couple of other outdoor chair and table, inside dining venues. A few expensive convenience stores that have little to choose from and don't stock bread and say ham to put in it or anything like that. So yeah if you can't risk the local food, you're hungry a lot on this tour. The first half of this trip, easily the most boring trip I've ever done in my life. The snorkeling on one day after that was good. Shout out to Hannah the local snorkeling company guide, she was brilliant. Lots of black tip reef sharks at one stop. NIce parrot fish, clown fish and other colourful fish at others. Unfortunately the demographics of my trip were mostly elderly couples (I mean I expected this with a train themed marketed trip) so didn't have the normal couple of Gopros in the water where everyone shared images. Melaka was where you could finally get something decent to eat. Although not by dining at the places the guide took us to. Although riding in a tricycle with toys all over it wouldn't normally be my thing, it was quite a fun experience. Although it would have been better to do it at night when the trikes are all lit up. Although why whoever did the itinerary thought it would be a fun idea to stop at three different places of worship (spoiler it was not), is anyone's guess. A lot more interesting stuff you'll come across in your free time than that. We did have a local tour with our Intrepid guide which was probably the only decent tour experience we had with him in Malaysia on the tour and where he wasn't constantly talking to us through a portable loud speaker, ugly mass tourism tourist style. Singapore we also took us to two good light shows, however for some reason we would get on the subway and then get off one station later. We could have just walked that and saved money. Why we had to pay for these subway tickets too in an included activity I don't know either. They didn't cost much, but still. Not a trip I would recommend. Days before doing this I booked another Intrepid tour in Malaysia for the north, I really hope that itinerary was designed by someone different.Show more

  When I originally read the description of Malaysias Jungle Railway Adventure I thought we were travelling on a 100 year old train. This was not the case, modern train. The tour was really good, going to interesting places. I would of liked 2 nights in Ipoh as it took 10hrs travelling time to get there and then left the next morning. I would of liked a stay in the Cameron Highlands, we drove through without stopping. Malacca was a highlight.Show more
