Itinerary
- Day 1
Edinburgh to Perth/Pitlochry
Your self-drive journey begins from Edinburgh heading south toward the Perth and Pitlochry area. The route covers about 70 km and takes roughly an hour, giving you time to settle into your accommodation and get oriented before evening.
- Day 2
Perth to Inverness
Head north through Perthshire and the Cairngorms, driving past lochs and mountain ranges toward Scotland's north coast. If you want to break up the drive, stop at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore (open April to October) to see how people lived over the past 300 years, including the thatched village from the Outlander series. Reach Inverness by afternoon and check out the cathedral or browse the Victorian Market. The drive runs about 200 km and takes 3 hours.

Inverness
Visit Fort George, Britain's largest fort of its type, built after the 1746 Jacobite uprising and still nearly unchanged from its original state. The fort gives real insight into that period of Scottish history. Later in the day, treat yourself to a traditional cream tea before heading back. It's about 50 km from your base and takes around an hour each way.

Inverness to Wick/Thurso
Leave Inverness along the scenic North Coast 500 road heading north. Stop at Dunvegan Castle (open April to October), one of Scotland's northernmost castles and home to the Dukes of Sutherland for generations. The interiors are impressive and the gardens slope down toward the North Sea. Continue to the Wick or Thurso region for your next two nights. The journey runs about 180 km and takes 2.5 hours.

- Day 5
Wick/Thurso region
Explore 'Scotland's last great wilderness' around Tongue with hiking trails through raw moorland at the Forsinard Flows Reserve. Walk along romantic bays and beaches like those at Durness. Or take an optional day trip by ferry to the Orkney Islands to see Skara Brae (a Stone Age settlement), the Ring of Brodgar, and the Standing Stones of Stenness before returning by late afternoon. The main route covers about 250 km and takes 4 hours.

Wick/Thurso to North West Highlands
If you went to Orkney yesterday, follow the north coast route today and consider stopping at Smoo Cave or the Balnakeil Craft Village near Durness to see local work. Otherwise, drive south from Golspie heading west through dramatic scenery of forests, lochs, moors, and mountains. Watch for single-track roads with passing places. Depending on which route you take, expect 200 km and either 3 to 5 or 6 hours of driving.

North West Highlands

North West Highlands to Isle of Skye
Drive along the North Coast 500 coastal landscape heading toward the Isle of Skye. Plan short stops in Ullapool or Gairloch to stretch your legs. Settle into accommodation on the Isle of Skye or in Kyle of Lochalsh for two nights. This leg runs about 250 km and takes 3.5 hours.

- Day 9
Isle of Skye
Spend the day exploring the island's variety. Hike to strange rock formations and consider the Fairy Pools if you prefer easier trails with natural pools and waterfalls. More experienced hikers can tackle the Cuillin Hills where peaks exceed 1,000 meters. Visit Dunvegan Castle surrounded by fine gardens, home to Clan Mac Leod for 800 years and housing the famed Fairy Flag. Head to Portree for dinner, sampling fresh seafood at harbor-side restaurants.

Isle of Skye to Loch Lomond/Stirling
Cross the road bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh to leave Skye and the North Coast 500. Just after the bridge, stop briefly at Eilean Donan Castle. Continue through Glencoe Valley, known as the 'Vale of Tears,' with its rich history and film locations from The Highlander and Harry Potter. Pass Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest loch surrounded by forested mountains. Spend one night in the Loch Lomond or Stirling region. The drive covers about 300 km and takes 4.5 hours.

Departure
Depending on where you're staying and your flight time, visit Stirling Castle in the morning or check out the Falkirk Wheel (a rotating ship's elevator) and the Kelpies (two 30-meter horse sculptures). Later drive to Edinburgh Airport (50 to 100 km, about 1 to 1.5 hours) or Glasgow Airport (40 to 60 km, roughly 35 to 50 minutes) for your departure.
