Itinerary
- Day 1
Lisbon
You'll start in Lisbon's historic quarters, walking through neighborhoods that hold centuries of the city's story. From there, head to Belém where you can see the monuments connected to the Age of Discovery, then take in the 25 de Abril Bridge (locals call it the Lisbon bridge) with its impressive span across the Tagus. The day includes a visit to the Maritime Museum in Belém, and you'll get to try traditional pastries like pastéis de nata that you can pick up at local spots throughout the area. Plan to spend the morning wandering the older quarters, move into Belém by midday, and save the museum visit for early afternoon when you're not rushed.

Lisbon to Évora
You'll head out to Évora for a full day that mixes industry and culture. First stop is a cork factory where you can see how cork transforms from tree bark into finished products, which gives real perspective on this Portuguese specialty. After that, you'll do a wine tasting at Ervideira Winery where they pour both reds and whites from the Alentejo region, and the vineyard setting makes for a nice break before lunch. Once in Évora proper, check out Praça do Giraldo (the main square with its fountain and arcaded buildings), then see the Roman Temple and the Chapel of Bones inside the Royal St. Francisco Church. The chapel's walls covered in human bones and skulls creates an unusual but historically significant atmosphere you won't forget.

Start the morning in Santarém, Portugal's Gothic capital, and walk through Portas do Sol Park where you get sweeping views out over the Tagus River and the Ribatejo plains stretching below. From there, you'll take a scenic ferry ride out to Almourol Castle, which sits on its own island in the middle of the river, making for quite the setting. Later, you head inland to Tomar to explore the Knights Templar heritage that runs deep through the town. You'll see the Convent of Christ with its elaborate architecture and the Pegões Aqueduct that brought water to the region. The day involves some travel between towns, so factor in time for the ferry crossing and driving, but the mix of river views, medieval castle, and religious history gives you a real sense of Portugal's interior character.
