GA Trip Overall the tour itself was not as my partner and I expected. There were a lot of days spent solely travelling on coach/boat and there were not a lot of included activities, which left us almost bored on several occasions and did not offer a lot of experiences for the price. CEO: Our CEO Barry was lovely. He tried where possible to make alterations to improve our experience and was full of quirky stories to make our coach trips entertaining. It was clear that he wanted to share the best side of his country and tried hard to explain cultural events and give us opportunities to try local delicacies. Included activities: Bali: The trip to the UNESCO rice paddy was enjoyable, as was the visit to the hot spring. However, there were many days where there was only one activity included in the price of the tour and as they didn't last very long (1-2 hours max), it meant that some days felt pretty empty. Our stay in Bali was made much more enjoyable by spending further money on the optional extras, such as the climb to the summit of Mt Batur, snorkelling in Candidasa, cooking classes and watching local dancing but I do feel for the price of tour, some of these could have been included within the cost. If we hadn't paid extra to participate in these things, our tour would have actually been dull. Lombok: I personally enjoyed the included activities in Lombok far more than those in Bali. The tour of the rice paddies was far better thanks to our local guide, who was keen to point out local produce and explain the process of growing rice and was very good at spotting the black monkeys. The visit to the local traditional village was nice-the guide was brilliant and we loved listening to the traditions but it felt like we were being taken around another market as every other building had been turned into a shop/stall selling the same sarongs and bracelets, which detracted from the chance to see how traditional Lombok villagers live. The visit to the two waterfalls was fun but the 3 hour coach journey there was not, nor the two hour return. Gili: We were glad that snorkelling was included in the price of the tour but it was far less enjoyable than snorkelling in Candidasa as there were huge groups of other tourists snorkelling at the same time, which made it uncomfortable and difficult to swim around. On the whole, the activities included in the cost of the tour were not value for money. The optional extras were thoroughly enjoyable and hugely improved our time but at a significant additional expense. Transport: All transport needed to participate in included activities and to get to hotels were included in the cost. The coaches hired were far too large for the number of people on our tour and were completely unnecessary. We had a number of very long coach trips, which when the itinerary was inspected much more closely, were the main "attraction" of many of the days. The ferry to Lombok was something to be admired. I'm not sure of the logic behind forcing us to endure the long journey on the local ferry, in horrendously stuffy conditions and without even offering us an included lunch, but it's not an "experience" that I ever intend on repeating. It was not pleasant. It was also a significant disappointment to realise that the second to last day of the Lombok tour was also another wasted day of "travelling" rather than being able to spend 2 whole days in the Gilis and return on the last day of the tour where we could then depart. Accommodation: Our accommodation was variable and on the whole, quite disappointing. Many of our rooms smelled musty/unpleasant; rooms leaked during the wet season downpours; many were in locations that were difficult to explore due to late arrivals or difficult roads/towns; and most on further investigation were very cheap to stay in given the cost of the tour (and presumed discounts given to G for fortnightly stays of large groups of people). The Aston hotel in Gili Trawangan was the only exception- it was a wonderful hotel and the only comfortable night's sleep of the entire tour but it's in a poor location, with a 30-40 minute horrendous bike ride to the main town or use of the exhausted horses (which I will discuss in due course). Values of G: 1) "We got that way by listening to travellers and giving them what they want: Top-notch tours in top-notch places with top-notch staff at great prices." Our experience was not top notch and certainly not a great price, given the large further expense to enable us to enjoy our tour. Simple things like having the welcome and farewell meals included in the cost, choosing suitably located hotels and actually organising the days so that we are given more time to explore accessible places (Gilis, Ubud) properly and giving us more activities and experiences on days where hotels were situated in less accessible locations (Munduk etc.) would have made us feel like we were getting more value for money. Our tour was 14 days long. Day 1 and day 14 were not activity days, so thats 2 days already wasted. Day 13 was purely a travel day, so another day wasted. Day 8 was another wasted day as it was the long ferry trip to Lombok and the village trip was rearranged as we were so uncomfortable from the sailing. Days 5 and 7 were "free days" so all activities were at our own expense. With this in mind, of 14 days, 6 days were either spent travelling with no experiences or were at our own cost entirely. On reflection, it's disappointing and had I known how long activities would take and had removed the rose tinted paragraphs of activities in the itinerary "Enjoy a spectacular drive" = "Sleep on the coach for hours", I think I would have reconsidered this tour. 2) Responsible Travel & Tourism I'm not sure what G mean by this- they haven't explained. I would take this to mean that G would ensure that guides, drivers and other members of the country's community utilised to provide us with experiences are paid fairly and well for their time and expertise. However, I am almost certain this is not the case, given the necessity to tip every guide, every driver and co-driver (!). Given that tour operators such as Top Deck have a specific "No-tipping" policy, it's disappointing to think that G are not responsibly and fairly paying locals. Furthermore, I would take this value to mean that G value animal welfare and would want to avoid animal cruelty and neglect. It then seems to me illogical to choose the furthest possible hotel away from the Gili harbour, where we are irritatingly encouraged to use the horse carts to transport us and our luggage to the hotel. The horses are not given regular drinks and food, are over used (day and night), are over loaded (with up to 5 passengers and luggage) and do not have the carts removed when not in use. They are forced to make difficult manoeuvres in the road, are whipped several times (our driver whipped the horse 6 times before we had to tell him to stop) and are forced to drive through horrendously loud streets at night. I refused to use them once we got to the hotel and ensured that only two of us were in the cart, rather than 3 or 4 as was the norm. Several horses were in distress and clearly not happy given the behaviour displayed. They are not responsibly cared for and to almost force your guests to use them because of your choice of hotel is poor. This is not being responsible and was a huge disappointment. Contact from G Adventures: Before our tour, the contact from G was actually pretty good, given our concerns regarding Agung and it's eruptions prior to our departure. However, when I contacted the social media page asking for an email address to express some concerns, I was called by an Indonesian representative through our CEO's mobile phone and not directly to any of my contact information, which I found highly inappropriate. He continued to pester me when I told him that I was not prepared to have a conversation with him at the time as I was in a taxi with several other guests and our CEO- he was not prepared to listen. I've since had a case opened but no one has contacted me directly since an email confirming the phone call on the 22nd December. On the whole, the tour itself was average. It was made astronomically better by the extra activities that we paid for and the group travelling with us. I will be far more hesitant in the future about booking a tour with G Adventures. Furthermore, I'd like to reiterate that these concerns are all linked to the program provided by G and not with our CEO, whom as I have already said, was wonderful.

Good combination of program and freetime. Our CEO, Hans, was just excellent. Actually the highlight of the trip was the visit at his home, walk on the close rice-field and visit the local school. The Agung caused some extra worries but at the end everything went Ok.

The trip was wonderful and in a special way, where you felt welcomed and comfortable immediately. Everything was mapped out for us in a structured way. The destinations were more than clear in the itinerary printed out and given to us on the first meeting. A note to mention here is the tour guide Andri. His presence at all times made this trip the best experience I could possibly ask for.
