  This is a partially guided South India tour with a strong route and excellent potential, but uneven execution. While some segments were genuinely memorable, particularly in Kerala, recurring issues with planning, consistency, and delivery meant the trip required more involvement and problem-solving from the guest than should be expected. On paper, this is a partially guided tour that covers an excellent route and includes many of South India’s most important highlights. The overall concept is strong and the destinations themselves are well chosen. However, while the itinerary looks appealing at first glance, the execution fell short in several important areas, particularly in operational coordination, accommodation consistency, itinerary structure, and the quality of guiding where guides were included. These issues combined to create a trip that required far more effort from the guest than should reasonably be expected on a tour of this type. As this was a partially guided tour, I did not expect guides at every stop. However, where guides were included, the experience should still align with what is outlined in the itinerary and inclusions, and this consistency was not always delivered. There were several logistical inconsistencies that should not occur on a professionally run tour. The paper itinerary provided on arrival did not exactly match the online itinerary, although the differences were not major. More significantly, a train journey listed as part of the itinerary never took place and was replaced with a long and tiring nine-hour drive. This change was not discussed in advance and had a noticeable impact on comfort and energy levels. Daily bottled water, which was clearly listed as an inclusion, was also not consistently provided. During the trip, the itinerary was reviewed using independent online research to assess overall flow and structure. While the locations themselves made sense, it became clear that the itinerary was not organised in the most efficient or logical way. Several attractions could have been reordered or grouped more sensibly to reduce unnecessary backtracking and overly long travel days. In its current form, the itinerary focuses more on covering a checklist of places than on creating a smooth, well-balanced experience. This review also highlighted alternative recommendations that were not only stronger but would have worked more naturally with the overall flow than some of the choices currently included. It also became apparent that some worthwhile attractions listed in the online itinerary were missing from the paper itinerary provided at the start of the tour, creating confusion around inclusions and expectations. Accommodation quality varied considerably depending on location. Hotels in Karnataka were generally good and comfortable, and hotels in Kerala were also of a good standard overall. Kerala, in particular, stood out as a strong part of the trip. The Periyar experience was the clear highlight of the tour. I was upgraded to the trek and bamboo rafting experience, which was exceptionally well organised and delivered. This part of the trip felt calm, immersive, and professionally managed, and it provided a welcome contrast to some of the more disjointed elements elsewhere in the itinerary. The stay in Kumarakom was excellent in terms of setting and atmosphere, although the room was not ready on arrival and service throughout the property, including at the restaurant, was extremely slow, making even simple meals time-consuming. Accommodation in Tamil Nadu was inconsistent. In Madurai, the room was not ready on arrival in the late afternoon, which should not happen at that time of day and resulted in unnecessary waiting after a long drive. The most problematic stay was in Ooty, where a last-minute replacement hotel was used instead of the originally planned Coonoor stay. This hotel was well below an acceptable standard. The room was extremely cold, there was no hot water, the television did not work, breakfast was served late, and food orders took over two hours to arrive. The location was also poor, far from attractions and amenities, leaving little to do nearby. When I attempted to walk across the road to a restaurant at another hotel, the man at reception discouraged me by warning about wild animals in the area, which felt unnecessarily alarming rather than helpful. The final stop in Mahabalipuram was a positive note on which to end the trip. The hotel there was above average, comfortable, and well located. This was further improved by a proactive change made by the tour operator at my request. The original plan included one night in Chennai, but this was changed to two nights in Mahabalipuram at no additional cost, which significantly improved the end of the tour. Where guides were included, the quality varied significantly. The guide in Kochi was excellent and added real value beyond the itinerary through local knowledge and context. The Bangalore guide was acceptable for a light first day, particularly after a long international flight, though travellers keen to maximise their time may find it more efficient to explore Bangalore independently using the metro and short auto rides rather than spending extended time in traffic. The guiding experience in Mysore was disappointing. On the first day, I was taken to only one attraction, while several listed sights were skipped. Instead, the itinerary was diverted to a very expensive oil and incense shop, which strongly felt commission-driven. Only after I raised concerns was I taken to Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, which is clearly listed as included, yet I was still asked to pay separately. I was also taken to Brindavan Gardens after complaining, but this came at the expense of missing the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, an important site that should reasonably have been prioritised. The driving experience highlighted an area where the tour operator should provide stronger preparation and oversight. While the driver was polite and cooperative, he frequently juggled two mobile phones without using hands-free for much of the journey, which became distracting. This would not have been an issue had calls been handled hands-free and attention remained primarily on the road and the guest experience. Combined with unfamiliarity with several planned routes and missed turns, this resulted in the guest having to assist with navigation more than expected. Given that the itinerary states drivers are trained and experienced, clearer route planning, hands-free use, and stronger briefing by the operator would significantly improve the tour. In terms of value for money, this tour delivers mixed results. The destinations and route itself have clear value, and when elements were well executed, the experience was genuinely enjoyable. However, the repeated inconsistencies in planning, accommodation quality, guiding, and execution reduce the overall value compared with what is advertised. Overall, this is a 3-star tour. The itinerary and destinations provide a solid foundation, and highlights such as Periyar and parts of Kerala show what the tour is capable of delivering. However, the operational gaps, lack of consistency, and level of effort required from the guest prevent it from justifying a higher rating. With stronger itinerary design, clearer documentation, improved hotel quality control, more reliable guiding where included, and better route preparation, this tour could realistically move into the 4-star range.Show more

  A terrible trip from start to end. Amit the tour operator is a liar. We paid for 4star hotels and he booked 3 star and some were only 1 star. We asked for hotels with pools, some hotels had no pools and most pools were unusable. Amit charged us an additional £1495 for the 4star hotels he never booked us. We paid him and he confirmed we were on the toy train in Ooty, were doing full day rafting and safari in Periyar, and had gala dinners Chistmas and New Years Eve. He took the money but didn't book any of this. The back waters boat trip was horrible we drove along a large river surrounded by diesel fumes and speed boats for 4 hours, we only spent 30 minutes on the quiet back waters. The drives between each destination were far too long and the car was old and small. In each city we had to pay the admission charges for all sites. Tour guides organised by Amit just wanted to take us to their rug shop and jewellery shop and spent little time showing us round any sites. All of our requests and Amit's lies are documented in the messages on Tour Radar and we are seeking compensation for this terrible holiday. Do NOT use Golden India tours ever. I cannot even recommend Tour Radar as lodging a complaint through their website is very difficult. We are both very experienced travellers having done independent and small group tours. This was the worst ever trip we've done all because Amit and Golden India Tours are complete con merchants.Show more

Visiting the Mysore Palace and exploring the temples of Madurai were highlights, but the hill stations of Ooty and Coonoor were the perfect points. Hotels were good, though I would have preferred a little more luxury in some areas. The driver was extremely helpful and navigated the roads with expertise.Show more
