"What I was looking for: - do more cultural activities than when travelling solo (I usually do none) - stay with a chill group of people for a week - see Kerala that I heard so much about My experience: - this tour has limited activities. It’s in the itinerary. I booked the only one that matches my dates without checking too much… - the group was pretty cool. The restaurants / bars we were recommended were bad though. - I got to see Kerala. The walk through the rice fields was amazing Overall, I’d say go for it if you’re not comfortable travelling on your own. The 2 days in the backwaters were worth going on a tour. The beach is better done solo travelling / resort / hostel.

"I haven't yet been on this tour which I signed up for four weeks ago. Payment is due tomorrow or the holiday will be cancelled but despite multiple contacts with them by chat or email they have been unable to confirm extra pre departure dates in Chennai. I put this down to local chaos or apparent incompetence. It looks as though I could book this hotel for the dates I want in 2 minutes online but I want the joined up experience with Intrepid. I travelled with them twice last year, including to India, and they were brilliant.

Kerala's budget tours run 7-8 days and hit all the right spots without breaking the bank. Starting in Kochi, you'll explore the old fishing nets and wander through aromatic spice markets before heading up to Munnar's tea plantations in the hills. The real cultural connection happens during homestays in Alleppey - local families share their cooking secrets and give you a genuine look at village life. Our guests love drifting through narrow canals on included houseboat trips, watching daily riverside scenes from their floating rooms. Nature enthusiasts get good value with guided visits to Periyar National Park to spot wild elephants and tigers, plus walks through spice farms where you'll learn about traditional growing methods and medicinal uses.
Luxury tours in Kerala really shine with stays in heritage properties and special cultural access over 8-14 days. You'll have expert naturalists in Periyar's wilderness, private houseboats with dedicated chefs and carefully chosen historic hotels. Our travelers tell us they love the exclusive touches - private Kathakali dance shows, visiting temples after regular hours and one-on-one Ayurvedic consultations. The routes blend cultural highlights like Mysore Palace, Meenakshi Temple and also quiet moments in tea estates and backwater hideaways. Expert guides provide rich historical context while dedicated staff handle all the details seamlessly.

Solo travelers get a lot out of our 15-day South India Revealed tour, which gives you time to relax on Varkala's beaches and explore old temple towns. You'll stay overnight with families in Kerala's backwaters and catch traditional dance shows in Kochi. Our guests tell us they like how the schedule mixes guided visits with free hours to wander markets or just chill on the sand. There's also a popular 7-day Kerala tour where small groups check out Fort Kochi's aromatic spice markets before heading up to see Munnar's misty tea fields.
The format works really well if you like being independent - you can join group activities or do your own thing. Many solo travelers love taking overnight trains to Mysore and Hampi since it's such a good way to chat with locals and other tourists. On the backwater boats, you get your own cabin but there are also common areas where everyone hangs out over tasty Kerala dishes made by the boat's cooks.
Couples tend to love our 10-day Kerala tour that takes in colonial Cochin, mountain stays in Munnar and also peaceful backwater trips. The private houseboat nights are especially nice - you can have dinner by candlelight while floating past village life on the banks. Another good option runs 12 days through Tamil Nadu and Kerala, combining temple visits with stays in lovely heritage hotels.
These trips are full of moments you'll remember together - learning Kerala dance moves in Kochi, watching the sun go down from tea plantations and cooking with local families. Many couples go for tours with restored heritage hotels, traditional Ayurvedic treatments and also private guides at temples. You get time for both cultural stuff and quiet moments, whether you're walking through spice gardens or watching the old Chinese fishing nets at work.
Our older travelers really like the 14-day Grand Tour of South India, which offers nice hotels while you explore Mysore Palace, Ooty's hill stations and also Kerala's backwaters. The guides know exactly how to help with temple stairs and busy markets, and we build in plenty of rest stops. Our senior guests often mention how much they enjoy mixing cultural visits with nature spots, from watching classical dancers to looking for birds in Kumarakom sanctuary.
Several tours aimed at seniors let you stay longer in each place, so there's less packing and unpacking. We pick hotels that are easy to get around, and activities can adjust to how mobile you feel. Lots of older travelers tell us they enjoy the social side of houseboat trips - chatting with other guests while watching Kerala life go by. With private transfers and attentive guides, everyone can take in South India's culture at whatever pace suits them best.
