A good trip that covered many areas of southern India. From the coastal areas to the mountains, we saw something of everything. All hotels up to standard, although the food availability at the hotel in Thekkady was not good due to the gas shortages as a result of the war. The dining room was very dark and the wait staff not particularly interested. Probably the worst meal of our entire 5 week trip. Swimming pool at this hotel was also not very good and needed a good clean. The beds in all the hotels were very good and the rooms were comfortable though some did not have fridges. The guides were good, though some places we did not have a guide and the driver's English was limited. The boat trip at Alleppey was particularly good especially since it was a cruise for just the two of us. Did not go on the safari in Perriyar as it was very expensive given the small number of tigers in such a large area. No water provided. Didn't see any of the view at Dolphin Point due to the early morning fog.
Grand Tour of South IndiaOverall amazing, some awesome sights including the Kathakali dance in Periyar. This is a do not miss! The various temples are extraordinary and most impressive. Caveat: non Hindus are forbidden entry (enforced) to some of the temples listed on the tour e.g. Raj Gopuran, Sri Ranganathaswahy. Krishna's Butterball (Vaan Irai Kal[) at Mamallapuram/Mahabalipuram is also exceptional and another must do. Our driver, Mr Umesh, was a reliable, helpful and above all safe driver and the car was new and well sized. Important as some days include many hours travelling. As always the hotels were very variable, some located inconveniently. I suggest considering an upgrade. Breakfasts were consistently excellent. One night on the houseboat was quite sufficient, note that there is no wi-fi. the food was excellent. WTX were ever helpful, and we thank them for their support.
Classic South India Tour with Extension Option KovalamThis was a very good tour. The driver was excellent, he made me feel really safe as a solo female traveler in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. I really appreciate the company upgrading my hotels, which helped in my sense of security. Most of the tour guides were also great. I was told by the guide that there is no Elephant Rescue in Thekkady or Elephant Sanctuary Tour in Periyar as advertised; only a commercial area where you can ride the elephants. I had paid extra to interact with the rescued elephants.
