Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Krems

You'll arrive in Krems and settle into your hotel, getting yourself oriented before the hiking begins. This is your chance to walk around town, grab a meal, and adjust to the area. The Danube Valley spreads out around you, and you're based right at the edge of wine country. Take the afternoon to rest up and prepare for the trails ahead.

  2. Day 2

    Krems

The real adventure starts with a hike up through the vineyards where you'll reach a tower offering views across the blue Danube, back toward Krems, and up to Göttweig Monastery sitting on the hillside. From there, you'll make your way across the hills to Fesslhütte, which is small and cozy, then follow a scenic route that takes you to the Dürnstein ruins. The ruins sit right above the river, giving you that dramatic overlook of the water below.

  3. Day 3

    Dürnstein to Rossatz

You'll ferry across from Dürnstein to Rossatz, then hike through what turns out to be Austria's largest apricot growing area. The old tracks wind through the orchards before climbing to Seekopf where the Alpine views open up. If you want more, there's an optional walk along the Danube through more orchards that loops back to the ferry, or you can call it here and head back to your base.

The World Heritage Trail takes you through the heart of it all, and you'll pass the Red Gate landmark at Spitz. From there, the path descends into Spitz itself, a well-known wine village right on the Danube where you can grab lunch or just soak in the setting.

Highly recommend this trip. The days can be long but the views are worth it. Most of the route is paved so you can probably get away with hiking shoes or trail running shoes. There is luggage transfer available but I didn't need it. The route from Unken to Waidring could be updated but I was able to find an alternate route with the map. Before you start you're given the full itinerary with a navigation system on the app as well as paper copies of everything.

Beautiful country. The hotels were very comfortable, clean, and safe. the downside was I was the only person on my tour/ circuit. I was so hoping for there to be others that I could have run into and hiked with. However, it was near the end of the season. So my mistake. With Eurohike I had to prompt them to give me information. Like my hotel literary, and hike guide. also I learned after arriving that there was an app that was essential to navigating the trails. Since there are so many junctions and side trails on the course. It took 2 days to get the guide files. As a result for the first 2 days of hiking I lost track a few times & had to back track to get back on the desired trail. I'm sure if I was with other hikers this wouldn't have been as big a challenge. Overall a fairly great experience. Hopefully going to do another one with the lessons I have learned from this one.

Hotel choices were great, walking routes were challenging at times due to gain in elevation but what goes up must come down so that helped! Beautiful to experience the peace and tranquility of the countryside.
