Machico
You'll arrive in Machico and spend your first day settling into the Atlantic air of Madeira. A relaxing walk on the golden sandy beach helps ease you into the hiking week ahead. This gives you a chance to get your bearings and adjust to the island's pace before things pick up.

São Lourenço Peninsula
A bus takes you to the easternmost point of Madeira for the São Lourenço peninsula hike. You'll walk narrow paths across rugged cliffs and barren headland, seeing deep blue bays and dark rocky outcrops. On clear days, Porto Santo appears on the horizon. After finishing the hike, the bus brings you back to Machico.

Porto da Cruz - Santana
After a morning transfer, you'll hike through dense laurel forest and into Madeira's green interior. Shady paths wind through a mysterious cloud forest toward Portela Pass, where striking Eagle Rock comes into view. From there, you descend through flowering fields to Porto da Cruz for a dip in the seawater pool, then transfer to Santana.

Santana

There's a stop at a charming cafe in Queimadas Nature Park, then you descend through sparse eucalyptus forest and flowering fields back to Santana. Free time to explore the typical thatched houses and theme park.

The descent follows the historic royal path down to Monte, a pilgrimage site, where you'll take the cable car to the botanical gardens. After touring the colorful grounds, you'll head to Funchal's lively old town to wrap up the day.

The route leads to Palheiro Gardens, where you can tour the extensive grounds and see impressive plant variety. Afterward, return to Funchal for a leisurely finish to your hiking week.
