Frankfurt to Beijing
You'll fly into Beijing today. Depending on when your plane lands, you might have the afternoon and evening to get settled in your hotel, grab dinner, and rest up before things get going.

Beijing
You'll arrive in Beijing and head straight to the Imperial Palace, the political center during China's feudal era. The complex is massive, so plan to spend several hours walking through the various halls and courtyards. This evening you'll have a welcome dinner with a welcome drink to start off your trip.

Beijing
Start early and head to the Great Wall at Badaling, which is the most representative section from the Ming Dynasty. After spending time walking the wall and taking photos, you'll return to Beijing to visit the Temple of Heaven and its Hall of Harvest Offerings. For dinner, consider trying Peking duck at a local restaurant.

Beijing to Xining to Lhasa
You'll fly to Xining and visit the Kumbum Monastery, which sits surrounded by watercourses and mountains. In the evening you'll board the Qinghai-Tibet Railway for the approximately 21-hour, 2,000-kilometer journey to Lhasa. Bring a book or get comfortable in your berth.

- Day 5
Qinghai-Tibet Railway to Lhasa
As the train moves through the landscape, you'll pass through some dramatic terrain on one of the world's most notable rail journeys. The highest point you'll reach is Tanggu Pass at 5,072 meters, so the views are pretty intense. After arriving in Lhasa, head to your hotel to rest and let your body adjust to the altitude.

Lhasa
Start at Potala Palace and make your way up to the roof for views across Lhasa. From there, head to Jokhang Temple to see pilgrims going through their practices. After that, walk around Barkhor Street and check out the shops selling Tibetan handicrafts and local goods.

Lhasa
Take a morning hike to Panbongka Monastery, which takes about 40 minutes on the pilgrimage route and gives you nice views over Lhasa from above. After that, you'll visit the Tibet Museum to look through exhibits on Tibetan history, culture, and heritage. Spend the afternoon walking through the displays.

Lhasa to Gyantse
You'll drive to Gyantse along one of Tibet's beautiful panoramic routes with mountain scenery the whole way. You'll pass through the Kampa Pass at nearly 5,000 meters overlooking Lake Yamdrok and then through the Karo La Pass. Stop at Pelkor Chöde Monastery and see the famous Kumbum stupa, then spend time with a Tibetan family to get a real sense of local life.

Gyantse to Shigatse
You'll drive through the granary region of Tibet to reach Shigatse, the second largest city in the area. Once there, visit the impressive Tashilünpo Monastery, which is still the residence of the Panchen Lama. The monastery complex is quite large, so allow time to explore the different sections.

Shigatse to Rongbuk
You'll travel over several high-altitude passes starting with Yalung La at 4,520 meters, then reach Gyathso La at 5,220 meters at the day's highest point. Later you'll arrive at Rongbuk, which sits at 4,980 meters and is famous for its view of Mount Everest's northern flank. You'll stay overnight in a simple guesthouse here.

Rongbuk to Shigatse
Take a bus to Rongbuk Monastery at 5,100 meters, the region's largest monastery built in the early 1900s. You'll explore the area around it and stop at the Everest Base Camp stone plaque at 5,200 meters for photos. Then you'll drive back to Shigatse with Mount Everest visible in the distance.

Shigatse to Lhasa
You'll make the journey back to Lhasa across the Tibetan plateau, passing snow-capped mountains, wide valleys, and hidden monasteries along the way. The drive crosses through some of Tibet's most striking landscapes, and you'll see evidence of the Buddhist culture and spirituality throughout the region.

Lhasa Departure
You've got free time this morning, or you can join an optional trip to Drepung Monastery, which once housed thousands of monks and still has around 800 there now. If you're interested, you can also visit Norbulingka, the summer home of the Dalai Lama. By afternoon, you'll head to the airport for your flight.
