Itinerary
- Day 1
Edinburgh to Inverness
You'll leave Edinburgh early and drive north through the Highlands, stopping to see Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument along the way. The route takes you through Callander and into the mountains where you'll pass by Loch Lubnaig, Loch Earn, and the dramatic Glen Ogle valley. After that, you're heading to Glencoe to walk around the mountain scenery and hear about the history of the 1692 massacre that happened there. Later in the day, you'll reach Loch Ness where you'll have time to look out for any sign of the famous creature. By evening you arrive in Inverness with the night free to wander the town.

- Day 2
Inverness to Kirkwall
Starting early from Inverness, you'll head north past Dunrobin Castle along the rugged northeast coast. The drive takes you to John o'Groats (timing depends on ferry schedules), and from there you'll board a ferry across Pentland Firth to reach Orkney. Once you arrive, you'll see the colorful Italian Chapel before heading into Kirkwall, the main town on the islands. In the evening you're free to explore, and St Magnus Cathedral from the 12th century is worth checking out if you have time.

- Day 3
Orkney
This day focuses on Orkney's ancient sites. You'll start at Skara Brae, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic village that predates both the Pyramids and Stonehenge. After that you'll see the Brodgar stone circle and the standing stones at Stenness, all part of the UNESCO Heart of Neolithic Orkney. Next is Maeshowe where you can see Viking runic carvings from the 12th century carved into the stones. From there you'll head back to Kirkwall to spend the night.

Kirkwall to Ullapool
After breakfast you'll board the return ferry to mainland Scotland. The drive south takes you along the northern coast where you'll see Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains rising up. There's a stop at Ardvreck Castle in the Assynt mountains, then you continue to Ullapool, a whitewashed fishing village at the mouth of Loch Broom. You'll arrive with the evening free to explore the village and waterfront.

- Day 5
Ullapool to Edinburgh
You'll start the journey back to Edinburgh with several stops to break up the drive. First you'll see Corrieshalloch Gorge where the River Droma drops 60 meters off a cliff, plus views of Loch Glascarnoch. Then a short stop at Culloden Moor, the site of the 1746 battle that was the last Jacobite stand on the British mainland. After that you'll visit Clava Cairns, the ancient standing stones that fans of the Outlander books will recognize. The route then takes you around the Cairngorm mountains through pine forests before returning to Edinburgh where the tour finishes.
