Itinerary
- Day 1
Paro to Thimphu
You'll arrive in Bhutan and receive a traditional welcome scarf from your private guide right at the start. After that, you'll stop at Tachog Temple across the Paro river on your way to Thimphu. Once there, check out the impressive Buddha Dordenma statue and the historic Tashichho Dzong. Before settling into your hotel, you'll get a feel for Thimphu, the world's only capital city without traffic lights, which takes some getting used to when you first arrive.

- Day 2
Thimphu to Punakha
After breakfast, you'll head to Punakha by driving through Dochu La Pass at 3,100 meters, where 108 Buddhist shrines and prayer flags line the route. On clear days, Bhutan's highest peaks come into view from up there. You'll visit Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery to make a butter lamping offering with the nuns, then walk around Talo village and its temple. Later, you'll stop at a local family's home to see how they live day to day, and you'll try cooking Bhutanese dishes or making butter tea yourself.

- Day 3
Punakha
This day stays in the Punakha valley. After breakfast, you'll drive to Nyizergang and hike up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, built by the Queen Mother, with views out over the glacial river and valley below. By lunchtime, you'll have a picnic by the river at Zomlinghtang. Then you'll head to the grand Punakha Dzong positioned between two rivers. Walking through farmhouses and rice paddies, you'll reach Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple. If you're interested, white river rafting is also available this day.

- Day 4
Punakha to Paro
You'll cross back over Dochu La Pass, giving you another shot at viewing the Himalayan peaks if the weather cooperates. At one of the highest points, you can hoist prayer flags yourself. As you wind through the Wang and Paro rivers, you'll head toward Paro valley. Then you'll hike to the ancient Zuri Dzong, which offers views of both Paro valley and Paro Dzong spread out below.

Paro
The highlight of your trip arrives now. After an energizing breakfast, you'll trek to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery, Taktsang, sitting on a cliff at 3,120 meters. Along the way, you'll learn how Guru Rinpoche arrived on a tigress and spent three months meditating here back in the 8th century. You'll also visit the ancient Kichu Lhakhang from the 7th century. By evening, you'll relax with a traditional hot stone bath and try your hand at local archery.
