What are the best network connections in Sri Lanka covering all locations ?

To name a few of the network providers in Sri Lanka, Dialog, Mobitel, Airtel and Hutch are well known. Sri Lanka's most popular and largest network providing partner is dialog. But what is more appropriate for a traveller, as of the best coverage is Hutch. On arrival, travellers can buy sim cards from the counters in the airport according to their preference.

How much does food cost and is it too spicy?

From a standard restaurant, lunch/dinner buffet or an ala carte can be bought for around 10$-12$. Rice along with Sri Lankan cuisines are available in plenty of shops much cheaper than standard restaurants but those are too spicy.

Can I pay foreign currency for archaeological sites and national parks entrances ?

Major archaeological sites such as Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura accept foreign currency and all national parks only accept Sri Lankan currency. So you can avoid inconveniences by having both currencies with you.

What is the best place to change my foreign currency?

Mainly you can change from any bank at the airport arrival terminal and authorized agencies in major cities.

Can I use my credit or debit cards for local sites ?

It is very difficult. Card payments cannot be made at any local sites controlled by the government agencies. For example, Elephant Orphanage/National parks, Sigiriya fortress etc. Card payments can only be made at certain stations for tourism activities promoted by private agencies. The best way is keeping cash on hand.

Did this trip solo and was really happy with it. First of all the communication pre tour was good. They were responsive and helpful with my questions. All the admin worked - bank transfers etc. They got my itinerary to me on time and things were like clockwork. The tour itself was the longest I could find on the internet as I really wanted to see as much of the place as possible. This tour covers north/south/east and west really well. It covers the famous UNESCO sites and Sigiriya Rock as well as Adams Peak. You get a chance to really explore on your own a lot and it was fun to just wander around places like Trincomalee and Jaffa doing my own thing. The tour takes in places like Aurugam Bay and the south - though only has a day looking around Galle - and it was pretty much perfectly paced. Sure, different people will be into different things but this tour covers all the bases. My driver - Ruwan - was excellent. He didn't feel the need to talk non stop. he chimed in with 'tour guide' stuff from time to time but otherwise was happy to just do the driving while I enjoyed relaxing and looking out the window. He was excellent at selecting alternate activities if things didn't go according to plan (for instance my tour hit Nuwara Eliya at Sinhalese New Year so the place was packed). I certainly felt better having a local driver on hand and his calm demeanour inspired confidence. All told this was a really good tour that covered the main bases of Sri Lanka and as I'd heartily recommend it to anyone.Show more

My husband and I traveled from Northern California to explore Sri Lanka for around a month. The planes, trains and automobiles getting there was long, but it was worth it! We enjoyed having Ruwan as our own private driver so that we didn't have to worry about renting a car and getting from place to place safely. The roads and the drivers reminded me of a video game from our childhood named Frogger. You’ve got the cars, trucks, vans, tuk tuks, motorcycles and lastly the roto tiller tractors made into vehicles! It was a competition for space on the road in the most interesting dance. Especially watching out for the rice that was being dried on the roads… We had a printed itinerary that we referenced each day and the transitions from hotel to hotel were effortless. The variations of the activities offered in this tour were good and we picked and chose which ones we visited as we went. This is an active tour so keep that in mind; hiking and walking all over the Country each day. It was a good mix of coastal areas and mountains, cities and then the rainforest. Some beaches were better than others and some had really good swells to play in. We could have done without all of the leeches in the rainforest or all of the needed mosquito repellent applied every day or the alcohol rules that differed all over the island; but those make the best stories and we will remember them forever. The nature and wild life we saw was beyond words and absolutely amazing. Elephants casually walking down the road and sometimes blocking the road waiting for their sugar cane payments. We saw all the different monkey species hopping from tree to tree. Oh my gosh watch out for the monkeys, they are very sneaky and have tempers! We witnessed them getting into peoples bags - they take what they want - it can be food or just normal items. Make sure you bring the correct plugs for Sri Lanka as some hotels have one and some have the others. You will need the G, D and M plugs and we bought the one we needed from one of the towns for like $3.00 USD. Overall we had a great time and the people of Sri Lanka were very genuine, generous and welcoming to us Americans. Thank you Ruwan for sharing your Country with us and giving us the best tour ever. The tour was even better than we expected it to be, the main highlights were everywhere and everything we we saw. Mr. Manjula was a confident driver who guided our vehicle everywhere safely, he also made sure our rooms were what we liked. He stopped for us to take photographs and there wasn't a question we asked he didn't know the the answer too, we felt safe and secure with him. As a couple, we took the 26 day tour with Show Lanka tours. This offered us the major tourist destinations and so much more. It was a pleasurable, leisurely pace with 2+ nights in many places. The accommodation provided was good and had a/c, good locations and breakfast as advertised. We chose this tour as it is one of the few that goes north to Jaffna. Our Driver/ guide (Mr Rewan) really went out of his way to accommodate our requests e.g stopping for photos or buying fruit from local markets.He has been very helpful and always looking out for our best interests.Show more

For example, Elephant Orphanage/National parks, Sigiriya fortress etc. Card payments can only be made at certain stations for tourism activities promoted by private agencies. The best way is keeping cash on hand.
