This 10-day trip through Botswana was better than expected. Now have lots more photographs of animals in the wild than I'd expected to get. To see such a large group of hippos in the water and to have lions walk by casually were much more than I'd seen in Kruger Park. Some of the travel by road was taking a lot of time and accommodation on the houseboat was a bit cramped. But in the end that was part of the fun as a way of meeting up with others who felt the same way.

I would say this was quite a very authentic experience. As a family, we really liked how Local safaris care about the local communities and how we are part of making a difference in the places we travel in. If you are more into making a difference with your travel plus authentic experiences then this is for you. Highly recommended

Best tour companies for Africa tours
Looking at these safari companies, each brings something different to the table. Our travelers consistently mention G Adventures for their solid planning and knowledgeable Chief Experience Officers, though there's occasionally a gap between what's promised and what actually happens on the ground. Acacia Adventure Holidays has built quite a reputation thanks to guides like Duncan and Philile. These two really shine - they're not just great at spotting wildlife but also whip up amazing meals and connect well with everyone in the group. It's those personal touches that make such a difference on a long safari journey. Absolute Africa takes a different approach, focusing on getting travelers right into local communities and authentic experiences. Their guide Aly gets mentioned time and time again in customer feedback - seems like there's no problem too big or small for them to handle. Travelers often share stories about how Aly turned ordinary moments into really special ones by knowing exactly when to stop for unexpected wildlife sightings or suggesting the perfect local market to visit. What's interesting is how each company has found its own way to make safaris work. While G Adventures has the big-picture organization down, it's often the individual guides at Acacia and Absolute Africa who create those memorable moments that travelers keep talking about months after they're home.
Best places to start your Africa tour
Looking to start your safari? Nairobi is the main jumping-off point with 36 tours beginning in Kenya's vibrant capital. Cape Town is another popular launch spot with 29 departures, while Victoria Falls, Johannesburg and also Livingstone each host between 6 and 8 tours. Our booking data shows most people secure their spots around 64 days before departure - that's a good two months ahead which helps you get the dates you want, especially during prime wildlife seasons when tours fill quickly. For gorilla treks in Rwanda and Uganda you'll want to book even earlier since permits are quite limited. Most small group tours keep things intimate with 8-12 people, perfect for experiences like gliding through the Okavango Delta in traditional mokoro canoes or watching the massive wildebeest herds cross the Serengeti.

Best time to visit Africa
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in Africa offers excellent wildlife viewing, especially across Southern Africa where animals gather at waterholes during the dry season. Our 40-day trips from Nairobi down to Cape Town really come into their own now - TourRadar customers tell us they love how easily they spot big cats and rhinos with less vegetation around. The premium safaris include evening drives at Kruger's lit waterholes, where elephants and hippos often come for their nightly drink. Many routes take you walking with skilled trackers in Matobo National Park, getting surprisingly close to both black and white rhinos in their natural habitat.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings Africa's landscapes to life, with our TourRadar customers particularly loving the 30-40 day overland expeditions during this season. The longer routes from Nairobi to Cape Town let you catch the dramatic contrasts, from tracking gorillas in Uganda's misty forests to watching elephants gather at Chobe's waterholes. Our travelers consistently highlight how spring offers perfect conditions for mokoro canoe safaris in the Okavango Delta and walking with local San guides in the warming Kalahari. Safari groups tend to be intimate with 8-12 people, which proves ideal for activities like learning traditional crafts in Tanzania's Usambara Mountains or joining anti-poaching units on patrol in Zambia. The cultural connections become especially meaningful in spring - you'll share meals with Maasai families, work alongside women's cooperatives that transform poacher snares into jewelry and also discover age-old traditions in Zimbabwe's rural villages while the weather is mild and pleasant.

- Summer 2026
Summer's the time when the Great Migration is in full flow and our Serengeti tours really shine. You'll spend three nights camping right in the park - there's nothing quite like waking up to wildebeest, zebras and also gazelles moving past your tent. Our longer overland journeys mix this incredible wildlife show with time at Lake Malawi, gorilla tracking in Uganda's misty forests and boat trips on the Chobe River watching elephants play in the water. Several routes let you meet the Black Mambas, South Africa's first all-female anti-poaching unit, who share real stories about modern conservation work.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn offers Africa's top safari experiences, especially across Southern Africa where wildlife viewing hits its peak in the dry conditions. Our 40-day overland journeys from Nairobi to Cape Town shine during this season, with TourRadar customers spotting big cats, rhinos, elephants and also wildlife more easily through sparse vegetation. The premium safari routes in Kruger National Park take full advantage of clear nights with evening game drives to lit waterholes, where elephants and hippos gather for their nightly drinks. Longer expeditions blend prime wildlife viewing with local connections - you'll join expert guides tracking rhinos on foot in Matobo National Park, spend time with San communities in the Kalahari, and participate in anti-poaching patrols in Zambia. Our travelers tell us autumn's mild temperatures make gorilla trekking more pleasant in Uganda's misty forests, while in the Okavango Delta, receding waters draw wildlife to permanent channels, creating perfect conditions for mokoro canoe safaris.

What's the best way to experience authentic Maasai culture during a Kenya tour?
You'll find an incredible cultural experience waiting at Tepesua Village in Kenya's Loita Hills where the Maasai people welcome visitors into their rich traditional way of life. The community greets you with vibrant songs and dances that really bring their ancient culture to life. What makes this place special is the Tepesua Widows Income Project where local women who've lost their cows to drought create beautiful eco-friendly handicrafts - everything from handbags to backpacks. The village has become a sanctuary for widows who can't remarry giving them a chance to build new lives through sustainable crafts and tourism.
What are the most popular safari destinations in Southern Africa?
Kruger National Park in South Africa and Chobe National Park in Botswana stand out as absolute wildlife viewing paradise. Kruger's massive reserve is home to over 500 bird species 100 different reptiles and 150 mammals including the rare African wild dog. Over in Chobe you'll find Africa's largest elephant population - about 70000 Kalahari elephants often seen taking a swim in the Chobe River. Both parks let you get close to the action through game drives walking safaris and boat cruises giving you different ways to spot the Big Five and other amazing wildlife.
Which destinations are ideal for combining a beach holiday with a safari experience?
Tanzania gives you the best of both worlds combining Zanzibar's dream beaches with the Serengeti's incredible wildlife and famous Great Migration. South Africa mixes it up perfectly too - you can dive into Cape Town's buzzing urban scene then head off to spot wildlife in Kruger National Park. Morocco offers something different blending Atlantic coastal beauty with Sahara Desert adventures. These spots let you create that perfect balance between relaxing on pristine beaches and experiencing Africa's wild side.
How can I make a positive impact on local communities during my Africa trip?
You can make a real difference by choosing tours that directly support local communities. Stay at places like Mdluli Safari Lodge in Kruger National Park which partners with the Mdluli community to create sustainable tourism opportunities. Get involved with local craft initiatives - visit the Tepesua Widows Income Project in Kenya or check out the workshop in South Luangwa Zambia where local women turn old poaching snares into beautiful jewelry. By picking responsible operators and engaging with community projects you're helping build a sustainable future for the places and people you visit.
