My wife and I hadn't "camped" since we were married some 35 years ago but we more than survived the 5 days on Safari. We loved the whole experience. For those thinking reluctantly about camping in a Game Park what you get far exceeds the little "perceived" discomfort of camping. If you stay in a Lodge adjoining a park - you will have to lose Game viewing time travelling in and out of the park to have that comfort,, The tour we were on is not Glamping, You sleep in two man tents, on cots with warm bedding and a cover on the floor of the tent. You are provided a rechargeable light with your tent, There is an open air "ensuite" at the rear accessed through a zip. It is like a closed courtyard with a canvas floor. The Camp Toilet is surprising okay and you have to co-ordinate a daily shower. My wife and I are not experienced campers and we managed the timing of all this. There will be an open camp fire and a communal eating area, The food was all cooked over an open fire and was great. KD our Chef really had to be congratulated for the food, The funny thing is the first night we were all in a Lodge after 5 days camping - we all said we probably slept better in our camp cot? There is NO TV - NO Internet. Everyone had wonderful days and arrived back in camp excited and tired having seen wonderful animal sightings all day. We had dinner, went to our tents and prepared for the next early morning game drive, From two very inexperienced Campers please do not let any thoughts of "Camping" hold you back. We had Hyena and Lions in our camp overnight - there was no danger - just stay in your tent at night, A herd of Elephants went by one night and given their size they are surprisingly quiet, The sights our Guide Chief showed us will be with us forever. Honestly our experiences in Africa have been wonderful. We saw 33 mammal varieties, endless birds, 33 Lions. 5 Leopards, hundreds of elephants, buffalo and hippos, many zebras and giraffes, multiple antelopes varieties in endless quantities, We saw a Leopards and Lions with Kills and saw a Leopard hunting, Our first day left us in awe and our second and third days were even better.

Overall it was a fantastic holiday and a wonderful, exciting and educational trip. Our children (10 & 12) had a fabulous time. We felt very lucky to have such a kind, funny and intelligent guide who was always on hand and keen to ensure we had the best time and the least to worry about. We also felt we got lucky with the other family on the tour who were lots of fun, keen and enthusiastic travellers and whose two boys, despite a large age gap with our children, were kind enough to spend lots of time together, got on like a house on fire and had so much fun. Highlights were the overnight train, the scenery at Aswan, sleeping aboard the felucca, the temple in Karnak, the valley of the kings and swimming at sunset in the Red Sea. Food was generally good but the food available in most of the hotels at lunchtime, poor versions of Italian dishes, was so disappointing when falafel, pitta, cheese pastries and other dishes we would happily eat for lunch were on offer at breakfast. The boat trip on the final day in the Red Sea was out of character with the rest of the tour - the crew showed little sign of caring about the reef or the fish, encouraging people to stand on the reef, disturb or feed fish for photo opportunities, and depositing us on a beach with a dreadful bar for two hours which constantly blasted music unsuitable for children. Drop this trip, replace it with a shorter snorkelling tour on a boat where the crew know and care about the reef and that would be a suitable end to an excellent holiday.

What our customers ask about Africa Family Tours
What are the best wildlife viewing opportunities for families in Africa?
East and Southern Africa's premier national parks provide exceptional wildlife encounters that work well for families with children. The Masai Mara in Kenya puts visitors in front of the annual wildebeest migration while offering regular sightings of lions elephants and giraffes through guided game drives. Morning balloon safaris float above the savannah giving a unique perspective. Botswana's Chobe National Park is home to Africa's largest elephant population with over 120,000 of these giants. River cruises bring families close to hippos crocodiles and abundant birdlife. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The highlights really are the monuments and seeing the animals so close and so many. Seeing a family of elephants playing in the mud was incredible."
What types of accommodation can families expect on an African safari?
Safari lodgings blend comfort with wilderness immersion suited to different preferences and budgets. The Mara Serena Safari Lodge in Kenya provides modern rooms with amenities while maintaining proximity to wildlife. More adventurous families opt for well-appointed safari tents in places like Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve complete with proper beds and attached bathrooms. These spaces let guests experience the sounds and rhythms of the bush. As one TourRadar traveler shared: "The mix of lodges and camping was perfect - brushing my teeth whilst elephants ate in the background was absolutely surreal."
What educational opportunities are available for children on African safaris?
Safari experiences naturally blend education with adventure. Select lodges such as Sweetwaters Tented Camp in Kenya run structured programs teaching children about wildlife conservation local cultures and natural systems. Families can visit Maasai communities in the Masai Mara region to learn traditional practices or spend time at Nairobi's David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage to understand elephant protection efforts. A TourRadar traveler reported: "Our children (10 & 12) had a fabulous time learning about the wildlife and cultures."
What activities are available for families besides game drives?
The African safari experience extends well beyond vehicle-based wildlife viewing. Families can take boat rides on Lake Naivasha explore Morocco's Sahara Desert by camel or snorkel in Egypt's Red Sea. Coastal properties like Diani's Baobab Beach Resort balance wildlife experiences with swimming pools kids' activities and beach time. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The kids loved the mix of activities - from the felucca cruise to snorkeling and the Valley of the Kings."
How long should a family safari trip be?
Most families find 8-13 days works best balancing exploration with rest time for younger travelers. A typical Kenya family itinerary runs 10-13 days combining wildlife viewing in Amboseli and the Masai Mara with relaxation along Diani's beaches. This duration allows families to settle into the safari rhythm without rushing. As one TourRadar traveler advised: "The 12-day trip was perfect - enough time to see everything but not too long for the children."
What is the best time of year for families to visit Africa?
The dry seasons from June to October and January to February provide reliable wildlife viewing and pleasant temperatures. South Africa's Garden Route sees peak conditions December through March ideal for mixing wildlife and coastal activities. The Masai Mara's famous wildebeest migration peaks July through October. A TourRadar reviewer noted: "Pack warm clothes for early morning safaris and be prepared for two or three early get ups - but they are worth it."
