Best tour companies for Peru tours
Looking at these top Peru tour operators, Lima Tours comes out strong for cultural trips - our travelers consistently mention how well everything runs, from pickup times to local transport and accommodations. Their guides really know their history and cultural background, which makes a big difference when you're exploring places like Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. TreXperience has built quite a reputation for trekking, especially on the Salkantay route. Their guides Elisban and Ray get lots of specific mentions in reviews for going above and beyond - like explaining local plants along the trail and sharing stories about growing up in the region. The food is a highlight too - their chefs Lorenzo and Amilcar somehow manage to cook up amazing meals even at high altitude camps. Intrepid rounds out the top choices, particularly good if you want to combine the Inca Trail with time in the Amazon. Their guides Marcia, Mel and Patricia bring real expertise - they know exactly when to time arrivals at key sites to avoid crowds, plus they're great at spotting wildlife and explaining the ecology. What makes their Amazon trips special is how they connect you with local communities and get you properly immersed in the rainforest environment, not just viewing it from a distance. The good thing about all three companies is they handle the complex permits and logistics that Peru requires, so you can focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about arrangements.
Best places to start your Peru tour
Cusco kicks off 47% of our Peru trips - its mix of colonial buildings and ancient ruins makes it perfect for getting used to the altitude before heading higher. Lima comes in as the next most popular starting point, especially for travelers keen to dive into Peru's excellent food scene before moving to the mountains. You'll find some great alternative kickoff points too: Puerto Maldonado for Amazon explorations, Huaraz for tackling the Cordillera Blanca peaks and also Arequipa if you're headed to Colca Canyon. Our booking patterns show you should lock in your spot about 110 days ahead, especially if you're traveling during the busy months of May through September. Most people find 2-3 days in Cusco works well for altitude adjustment, and San Pedro Market becomes a daily stop for many - it's ideal for trying Andean ingredients and watching local life play out. If the altitude worries you, many of our guests start in the Sacred Valley instead; it sits lower than Cusco, letting you work your way up more gradually.

Best time to visit Peru
- Winter 2025 / 2026
The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu really comes into its own during winter months, with travelers taking on shorter routes that blend hiking with local culture. You'll climb through snow-capped peaks at 4,630m before heading down into milder cloud forests where orchids bloom and hummingbirds dart about. Our trekking chefs get lots of mentions in reviews for serving hot meals at camp and also traditional Pachamanca barbecues despite the cold. The 7-day Inca Trail works well too - you get proper time to adapt to Cusco's altitude before tackling Dead Woman's Pass, plus you'll find way fewer people at ruins like Phuyupatamarca compared to busy seasons.

- Spring 2026
The Sacred Valley shows its best colors in spring when hillsides turn green and local markets overflow with fresh goods. Most of our travelers start in Lima exploring the colonial center and Larco Museum, then fly to Cusco where guides point out how Spanish buildings sit right on top of Inca walls. The 8-day trips through Cusco, Sacred Valley and also Machu Picchu let you take it slow - there's time to check out Moray's circular terraces, watch salt being harvested at Maras and spend quality time with weaving communities in Chinchero. Spring's perfect hiking weather makes the Inca Trail Express popular too, mixing cultural visits with 4 days of solid trekking.

Summer draws our more adventurous types looking for serious treks with deep cultural connections. The 4-day Salkantay route is a real challenge - you'll hike from 4,630m alpine zones down to cloud forest in just one day, watching condors soar overhead and staying at remote camps where our chefs somehow create amazing meals. Many pick week-long journeys from Lima's old quarter through Cusco's architectural mix and finally taking either the classic Inca Trail or alternative Quarry Trail to Machu Picchu. Our porters make these high-altitude adventures possible while guides share rich Inca history along the routes.

- July 2026 popular 798 tours
- August 2026 792 tours
- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn offers ideal weather for mixing Peru's coastal and mountain experiences. Our travelers like starting with two days in Lima checking out colonial buildings and pre-Columbian artifacts at the Larco Museum before heading up to Cusco. The 7-8 day cultural tours work well - you'll adjust to the altitude while exploring local markets, watching traditional weaving in Chinchero and discovering Moray's agricultural terraces. Inca Trail treks run smoothly in autumn with fewer hikers on the path to Machu Picchu, and our porters keep camp comfortable even as high-elevation temperatures start dropping.

What Should I See On My First Trip to Peru?
If you're heading to Peru for the first time you've got to see Machu Picchu - it's just incredible and really is as amazing as everyone says. Cusco's definitely worth exploring too it was actually the Inca capital and you'll love wandering through the Sacred Valley between Cusco and Machu Picchu. The views are stunning and you'll find fascinating Inca sites like Moray and Maras along the way. Don't miss Lake Titicaca it's the highest lake you can sail on and those floating islands are unlike anything you've seen before. In Lima make sure you dive into the food scene and check out the colonial architecture - the Larco Museum's pre-Columbian collection is really something special.
What Natural Areas Can I Visit Outside the Cities?
The Amazon rainforest is just incredible and easier to reach than you might think. Fly into Puerto Maldonado and you can stay at places like the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion - they'll set you up with amazing guided tours into the jungle. If you're up for something different head to Colca Canyon from Arequipa by bus. It's one of the world's deepest canyons and watching condors glide over those dramatic landscapes is absolutely unforgettable.
Which Historical Sites Should I Visit Besides Machu Picchu?
You'll be amazed by Moray's circular terraces they're a brilliant example of Inca agricultural innovation. The Maras salt ponds are pretty spectacular too - imagine over 3000 salt pools stretching out across the landscape they've been using them since Inca times. And definitely check out Sacsayhuaman just above Cusco the stonework in this massive Inca fortress will blow your mind.
